That's it.

I don't get what the problem is?

Chubbymomie2012 Tue 06-Aug-13 21:51:57

watching with interest :-)

Anniegetyourgun Tue 06-Aug-13 21:52:33

It's a horrible hate-filled hypocritical rag, that's why. Next!

Two words - Lucy Meadows.

acrabadabra Tue 06-Aug-13 21:54:19

Me too. grin

<too bad I don't got popcorn>

AnythingNotEverything Tue 06-Aug-13 21:54:22

Do you read it?

foslady Tue 06-Aug-13 21:54:35

What nailed it for me was when their front page headline was along the lines of 'what benefit Britain means'....and it was a picture of Mick Philpott the day after he'd been found guilty.

Thanks. Really DM. Good to know you consider me the same as a murderer who has no conscience.

WorraLiberty Tue 06-Aug-13 21:56:21

Most tabloids are crap

The Daily Fail is apparently crappier than crap

I don't know, I don't read any newspapers...I get my news updates from the BBC.

I do wish for the love of all things holy, people would stop moaning about the Daily Fail though.

They probably get half their online readership through Mumsnet alone.

Bogeyface Tue 06-Aug-13 21:58:05

Because it caters exclusively to the monied middle Englanders that believe the immigrants, single mothers, benefit claimants, the disabled, children of single mothers, mothers who work, mothers who dont work, the low paid and anyone who isnt sitting on a wodge of equity and a final salary pension to be root of "Broken Britain". The DM then writes all its articles in order to uphold those beliefs.

Some say ignorance is bliss. I say that ignorance is what you get after reading the DM.

Artijoke Tue 06-Aug-13 21:59:12

Read 'Flat Earth News'. It's a book by a journo about journalism. It tells a horrific tale about the Daily Mail and how it seeks stories to suit its own agenda which is basically that only white, middle class families matter. The DM news room heard of a murder in the Midlands, while family slain in their beds, they immediately dispatched a journalist to cover said story. When he was on the train he got a call from the Editir who told him to come home: it turned out the dead family were not white, the DM wouldn't be covering the killing.

Bogeyface Tue 06-Aug-13 21:59:17

They probably get half their online readership through Mumsnet alone. Thats why a lot of MNers wont click on a DM link. They are often used because they are one of the few papers that doesnt charge to read it online, for a very good reason........

ICBINEG Tue 06-Aug-13 22:00:38

I hate the DM because it is full of lies....and I hate lies passed off as truth.

I flicked open a copy by mistake at my DGM's and found an article about how a woman had had a boob job to go from a 32A to a 36DD....yup that's right according to the DM a boob job changes your rib cage size.

I don't imagine for one second that this rate of factual inaccuracy in not representative for whole shit pile.

Shy wouldn't you hate that?

WorraLiberty Tue 06-Aug-13 22:01:57

I know what you're saying Bogeyface but often the MNetters who are adamant they don't read it, are the ones who seem to know the most about it...all the current stories etc wink

I don't give a shite what people read, but why not be honest?

The "Oh I read it a PIL's house/at the hairdressers/Doctor's surgery"...it's all a bit crap really grin

chihiro Tue 06-Aug-13 22:03:50

Because they deliberately appeal to people's basest prejudices, then seek to confirm and strengthen those prejudices. You could argue that all newpapers do this up to a point, but the mail does it to a terrifying degree from what I have read in it.

KentishWine Tue 06-Aug-13 22:06:44

Aside from their editorial policy, which is to spread hatred and misunderstanding, they have a horrendously misogynistic view of women.
They think that:
Women who have children too young are morally corrupt
Women who have children too late are selfish
Women who don't ever have children are not real women
Women who leave their children in day care are heartless
Madonna is the devil (she is 50+ and wears 'sexy' clothes)
Young celebs breasts are public property

thismousebites Tue 06-Aug-13 22:07:45

Apparantly, going by MN rules, reading the Guardian is just as bad.
Would be interested to know what newspapers are seen as acceptable.

McNewPants2013 Tue 06-Aug-13 22:07:50

I like reading the daily fail links, it makes me laugh at the crap that they print.

Don't believe any of the stories in there.

Saffyz Tue 06-Aug-13 22:08:10

The DM is self-righteous, sexist and narrow-minded.

daisychain01 Tue 06-Aug-13 22:09:30

I read the Daily Wail at the weekend, but I also read the Times and the Guardian - howzat for a balanced journalistic diet?!

I tend to read all newspapers with an open, sceptical and cynical mind and base my opinion on multiple sources of information.

Alternatively I read some articles and just laaaaaarf at the crapinola staring out at me on the page. Who actually cares if Simon Cowell has made some bird preggers, bovvered??? Mee??

I also like the Daily Wail because I collect the Reward Points and get a nice £25 voucher through the post from time to time!

gordyslovesheep Tue 06-Aug-13 22:09:34

it's only poverty of aspiration if you think aspiration is only about money and material possessions - maybe people have different aspirations

PiratePanda Tue 06-Aug-13 22:10:19

Because they are engaged in a weird quest in order to divide all the worlds objects into things that cause cancer and things that cure cancer.

Oh, and because they have an unbelievably misogynistic agenda.

gordyslovesheep Tue 06-Aug-13 22:10:30

Oh FFS MN I did not even open this thread let alone intend to post that! what th fuck happened!!!!!!!

wanderings Tue 06-Aug-13 22:11:27

They make a huge effort to appear plausible and serious (just as the likes of Tony Blair and other liars do, and have done for generations).

It's when you start reading it regularly, and comparing it with other newspapers, that you start noticing their agenda.

Make people angry over their morning cornflakes. "Serial killer is spared jail for the third time."

Lots of statistics distorted, or probably made up on the spot.

They tell you about mansions for sale "for a cool £55 million". What for? To make everyone green with envy, and even angrier into their cornflakes.

You frequently hear the value of somebody's house, even if it has no apparent relevance to the article concerned. I guess it's so that readers can work out how high that person is in the pecking order.

You might hear a balanced debate on the radio in the morning. Then as you enter a shop, you'll see a DM headline screaming one side of the debate very loudly indeed.

This summer, we have gone from "Where did the heatwave go?????" to "Prepare to roast until the end of August".

What is more notable is what they DON'T tell you. For example, the murder mentioned by Artijoke.

(Funny how there has been no mention of drought this summer, not even by the DM!)

JumpingJackSprat Tue 06-Aug-13 22:11:30

I dont read it since i saw a story about a child hit by a car and they had a photo of her being worked on by the paramedics. they dont give a fuck how they get peoples attention. The story accompanying the photo was full of tributes because the girl died. made me want to throw up and ive not touched it or clicked on it since and i judge anyone that does.
