To expect a reduction in the bill from this hotel?

We checked in late yesterday afternoon. The little light over the bathroom mirror didn't work, which wasn't a problem, but this morning DH went to take a shower and it almost overflowed - it wasn't draining. We told reception about it and went out for the day. This evening we arrived back around 8pm and asked about it, they said it was the maintenance man's day off, they hadn't been able to fix the light but the cleaners had 'poured some bleach down the drain'.

I took a very quick shower and had to cut off the water after 3 minutes (yes I timed it!) as it was about to overflow. I rang reception to let them know, they rang back a few minutes later, suggesting we use the bathroom in another room - the hotel is fully booked so we can't change rooms.

I said that wasn't acceptable, that we wouldn't use the shower again, and I wanted to speak to a manager in the morning when we check out. Five minutes later reception rang back to say they'd found someone to look at the shower. He arrived armed with a pair of pliers, a screwdriver and what looked like a couple of kebab sticks, he pulled the drain cover off and pulled out the most enormous tangled lump of hair - it was hand-sized, and I'm not exaggerating.

DH is fuming and thinks we should get a reduction in the bill.

I work in a hotel, and yes, 20-40% reduction would be the norm in this situation.

Good to know we're NBU. It's actually a 'nice' hotel - we're paying almost £150 a night for B&B in a family room (DH, me and 15yo DD), so we sort of expect decent service and for things to be working.

YANBU, ask for a reduction and if they refuse - insist on it!

If they refuse to take money off, do we have any rights to refuse to pay the full amount? We've already paid the first night in full up-front on a credit card plus charged a meal to the room, so they have our CC details.

Sorry, but I wouldn't expect to get a reduction for this. The shower has been fixed - what's the problem?

Because it impacted on their stay and they made no effort to fix it until the OP had called down twice to ask for it to be dealt with. I would expect either a reduction or a freebie of some kind - it's the sort of thing they should check periodically to ensure everything is working properly.

DH showered this morning - DD and I couldn't as it would have flooded the floor. They did not fix it until after 8pm tonight. I was more annoyed at the suggestion that we go to another room to shower - if we wanted to do that we could have stayed in a cheap B&B with a shared bathroom. DD is 15 and has very long thick hair, she would have had to walk the public corridors with her hair wrapped in a towel - not exactly what we have paid for. If there's a problem and the maintenance man is not working, they should call someone in to fix it.

Have asked my DH about this (he works away a lot). He says he would expect a 50% reduction in the bill (but he is quite hardfaced Grin ). Obviously not the food bill though.
He says - speak to the duty manager and have in mind exactly what you want to achieve before you start. When you are checking out you always have the option of not authorising payment. If you have paid by credit card you can dispute any payment with the credit card company. He also asks is B + B independent or part of a chain as it's often easier dealing with a chain.
And YADNBU...urgh re hair and wtf re using another bathroom!

We are in a Travelodge for a few days. It was really cheap and cheerful. The one we are in now has a couple of problems - a plug too small for the bath, a toilet seat that is wobbly and a remote control missing for the tv. We reported these to the manager and she was fab. She has given us free breakfast while we are here, as well as locating a plug and remote for us with no issue at all.

If they can do that for us in a Travelodge then I would expect a reduction in a hotel as expensive as yours.

How are you supposed to use a different bathroom if the hotel is fully booked? Do they have spare bathrooms? I don't get out much

I stayed in a hotel a few months ago, there was no hit water in the morning. I asked about it ad they said, yes, sorry there was a problem and someone was on ther way to fix it.

Got back in the evening to fix a letter of appogy and a set of posh shower scrub and moisturiser.

Checked out the next day and they took off a full nights charge! I was amazed and said a full night discount wasn't needed as I'd still used the room but they were adamant.

This was in Holland though so not crappy UK customer service.

reasonable to expect a deduction on the bill for one night, not the second.

Well we went to check out, they had already taken £24 off the bill but I said I wasn't happy with that so they doubled it - £48 off a £148 room. Reasonable, I think - we DID have the use of the shower the second night so I have no problem paying full price for that. The duty manager was very apologetic.

I had a nasty nice write-up all organised for TripAdvisor too. Blush

sounds reasonable. I'd still write the trip advisor review, saving exactly what happened.
