AIBU?

to be somewhat sorry for the Queen as she's unable to go on holidays abroad, it seems?

Maybe I'm just ignorant, and she may go (in secret?) or used to go until recently with her husband, but if not, surely spending ALL summers in Scotland whatever the weather is samey and not very healthy (no sea and sun benefits)? Older people especially need their sun, not least for the vit D to avoid osteoporosis (women especially).
And I don't mean official visits, just private time, few weeks of doing nothing.

What a weird post! She can holiday where she likes. Doubt very much she wants to sunbathe in Benidorm Hmm

the queen has travelled very well, as an 86 year old i think she should be taking it easy.

Are you having a laugh? The posh love it up here. And I'm pretty sure she's not a candidate for osteoporosis, what with a) the foreign travel b) the amazing medical care and meeting of her nutritional needs and c) it's not actually always cold and dark. In fact, right now, sunset at Balmoral will be around 11pm and sunrise is around 4 am. You just need light for vitamin D, not heat.

We do have sea and sun in Scotland ...

Nah, she loves the current set up. She gets to travel on foreign trips and Balmoral is down time. Pretty sweet I'd say.

I've not had the money for a holiday outside of Scotland for years but have managed to stay healthy, I hadn't realised I was harming myself or my children Hmm.

How many women her age want to be jetting off all over the world?

YABU, I'm sure she could go anywhere she had the inclincation and health to go to.

Of course everybody in Scotland is crippled with rickets and osteoporosis.

Perhaps she doesn't enjoy foreign holidays Confused maybe she goes but doesn't declare it as its a) nobody else's business b) for security issues.

Same for my mum, OP the insurance costs as much as the holiday, if she can find someone to insure her. She can't be bothered any more.

I imagine the queen's insurance would cost more too. She'd need a private jet to repatriate her body for starters.

I was brought up in scotland and my left hip is giving me gip. Proof if proof were needed of how harmful Scotland can be.

I had a terrible limp after a week in Scotland. Blasted Munro bagging.

OP, you know that she doesn't have to holiday in Scotland. She chooses to because she likes it.

So my painful knees were caused by the week in a caravan in Kirriemuir when I was 11. Explains so much.

Really waffly my friend's scottish terrier has the same problem. She is considering going down the no win no fee compensation route for his new kennel hip once its figured out of course who exactly ought to be sued. Hmm

I think part of the reason she likes Balmoral is because she gets a good chunk of time where she is just in one place the whole time - the attraction is that you're NOT constantly travelling all over, as is the case for much of the rest of the year.

She probably thinks it's safer than risking one of Phil's gaffes with Johnny Foreigner.

This is the most impressive exams of passive aggressive ageism and xenophobia I've seen in a long time. And the op manages to cram it all into 9 lines.

I'm now really sad for all the poor old people stuck with only crappy samey Scotland to visit.

OP has just explained my painful cracking knees that I've had ever since a family holiday in 1983 to Scotland.

Can I sue the Scottish tourist board?

Goodness me the Royals just LOVE sitting in a hedge with their tweeds soaked through stalking deer.

I would also imagine that she gets some R&R days built into her tour schedules, so tour of Australia:

Day 1 - arrive. Rest.
Day 2 - meet prime minister. Visit school. Walkabout. State dinner in evening
Day 3 - Rest day - sit by pool with pina colada
Day 4 - visit museum. Unveil statue of dead relative. Visit hospital. Private dinner with pm.
Day 5 - Rest day. Shoot some kangaroos.
Day 6 - Driven through streets to wave. Lunch at parliament house. Get on plane

I go on one holiday a year and that is to Scotland. And I go in the winter too, so no sunbathing for me.

Good job I hate the heat Grin
