To think every person should know not to kiss a dog on the cheeks?

Well, I'm sure I am it would be unreasonable to expect that, but now that I have got your attention I just want to mention this, feel free to pass it on in order to prevent more accidents:

From the human perspective, a kiss on the cheek is a harmless expression of friendlyness, from a dog perspective it's a different thing:

If dogs were still running wild, the way they would kill their prey would be by grabing it by the neck and giving it a good shake. This is still embeded in dogs' nature, you have seen them playing with toys this way.

In the same way, when 2 dogs fight, the one that grabs the other's neck is the one who wins the fight, with a good likelyhood of the less lucky one dying in the process.

It is therefore that when a dog sees another mouth going straight in the direction of its neck, the ancient instict of survival just kicks in and they bite back.

It may be that you kiss your dogs' cheeks without problem, but then your dogs trust YOU enough not to react, but this might not be the case with visits, other people, or even other members of your family.

So please teach your children that it is not safe to kiss even friendly dogs on the cheeks and, do not let anyone try to kiss your dog on the cheeks either. If this was general knowledge, many accidents coukd be avoided, many people wouldn't have been hurt and many friendly dogs wouldn't have been put to sleep.

Thank you,

I kissed my cat's tummy and he got a shock and thought I was trying to disembowel him so he attacked my hair confused

MultumInParvo Sun 30-Jun-13 16:43:03

My dogs don't have cheeks. They have faces that go straight to necks.

TheDetective Sun 30-Jun-13 16:43:11

YABU. I kiss mine on the nose. She kisses me anywhere she can get to. Soppy bugger.

Am imagining someone air-kissing a dog now. Ha!

People try to kiss dogs on their cheeks? Really? How bizarre. confused

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:45:08

My dog tries to put his bum cheeks in my face so it is sort of kissing his cheeks confused

Why would anyone try to kiss a dog on the cheek!?
I've always had a dog and never come across anyone that would think this was a good idea. confused

Littleballofhate Sun 30-Jun-13 16:45:45

I was always taught never to put my face next to a dogs face. When did all this canine cheek snogging start?

maras2 Sun 30-Jun-13 16:46:40

Who the heck would want to kiss a dog anywhere ?

Mrsrobertduvall Sun 30-Jun-13 16:47:00

I wouldn't kiss a dog anywhere, let alone his cheeks, be they face or arse.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:47:24

I never kiss my dog on the face my dds dont either why would people kiss dogs faces cheeks or otherwise, my dogs face is always in his bits or up his bum <heave> id rather not

YANBU

However,

my dog just loves a good cuddle, head to head. But then she is possibly the laziest dog in the world, too lazy for walks and certainly too lazy to be aggressive.

ITCouldBeWorse Sun 30-Jun-13 16:48:28

I'm pretty sure people should not kiss dogs at all.

I don't think other people should be expected to know about different breeds bizzare variations.

Like whatever breed it is that feels pain if you push it's 'shoulders', so when someone's unsupervised hound of the baskervilles jumps up at you, you are supposed to stand still terrified while it drools on you so it does not savage you.

Urgh

Yanbu, everyone knows the best place to kiss a dog is its cool wet nose mmmmmmm

Gonnabmummy Sun 30-Jun-13 16:55:56

My dogs give kisses well licks all the time. They jump on the bed when in the morning and do this. They don't try to kill me. it is not aggresive behaviour If you observe dogs in the wild or wolves you will notice that if one approaches the other right away no aggression shown they will lick around the other dogs mouths this is a sign of respect/ submission. All packs show this behaviour.
Yabu it's one thing to not allow small children to approach a dogs face but an adult can choose to kiss their dog if hey want.

The thought of kissing a dog anywhere makes me want to vomit.

Chandras Sun 30-Jun-13 16:57:37

I love my dogs, they are like my children and I know where the limits are, but it has struck me to see that everytime you read in the news some one has been mauled by a dog on the face, it almost always say something about the victim just wanting to give a dog a kiss and the owner being totally in shock about the dog reacting like that.

So no need to agree or disagree with me, kiss your dogs as much as you want but bear this in mind :-)

SisterMatic Sun 30-Jun-13 16:57:58

I would, but then I know a dog that eats his own poo..so doggy face kisses are off the menu.

I can do pats, strokes, cuddles and bellyrubs though.

Corygal Sun 30-Jun-13 17:03:05

I smother Mr Cory, the fat tabby, in belly kisses and smackers on the cheek. He tolerates it graciously as just another weird human thang from his daft fat servant.

hugoagogo Sun 30-Jun-13 17:11:55

You shouldn't kiss dogs full stop.

It is icky.

BellEndTent Sun 30-Jun-13 17:15:25

Thanks for the info - will put it away for later. Isn't there something about putting your head on top of your dog's head or letting them do it to you that can be dangerous too? Is it a sign of dominance or have I had a (very odd and boring) dream?

I didn't know this but wouldn't do it IYSWIM? Grim!
