...about wee in the kitchen sink?

Genuinely don't know who is being unreasonable in this situation! I was visiting neighbour. We all live in tall terraced houses, with no downstairs loo. Her DD is potty training, so there was a potty in the kitchen, on a mat. DD used the potty- then her Mum emptied it in the kitchen sink and washed it away with water.
I was a bit (shock). She saw my face, and explained that wee is actually sterile when it comes out, which explains why you can drink it (if you want!) and that she puts bleach down the sink every evening, and doesn't ever use the sink for anything except getting water, as all dirty pots go in dishwasher, and she doesn't do handwashing! Plus- it was only a little girl fairy wee....
I felt that although it's not something I would do, I could see her point. However, when I told DP he was appalled, and is now refusing to go round there next weekend for the BBQ we've been invited to. Says he wouldn't enjoy the food! I've pointed out that it's unlikely she'll marinade the sausages in the sink, but he won't be budged.
So- is she unreasonable for tipping wee in the sink?
Am I unreasonable really not to care?
Or is DP unreasonable for being horrified and refusing to go round?

DP has agrees to listen to Mumsnet jury!
Thanks for reading!

Mind you, I used to empty DS potty onto the plants, maybe that's unreasonable too :)

Yep, its totally disgusting and lazy. Couldn't she have emptied it in the outside drain if you were in the kitchen and she couldn't be arsed to go upstairs? I'm certain I wouldn't want to eat in the house of someone with such vile habits.

Ok, it's not something I would do but then again, I don't think it would bother me if someone else did it in their own house.
Not to the point of refusing to go round for a BBQ.

So yes, I think your DH is a bit over the top.

EURGH. I would never eat or drink anything from this woman's house. I also feel sick when I see people wash their faces or brush their teeth in their kitchen sinks or bathe their babies in the kitchen sink. Disgusting.

It is unreasonable to make a habit of tipping wee down the sink, I think. Mind you, I have seen my dh take a drunken piss in the kitchen sink when he couldn't be bothered to go to the upstairs toilet in a house we lived in many years ago.

I'm with your DP, I wouldn't want to eat there either! Where the fuck does she wash her fruit and veg?

I don't think it's that bad. Not at that stage yet as DS is too young. But I have found myself relaxing over many things since becoming a parent (baby wipes removing sick from my shoulder and me not changing my top, for example).

Clearly urine is not sterile (!) but if she doesn't have food or pots anywhere near it, and cleans it every day them what's the harm?

I agree with your DP.

I had a friend who did this.
I stopped going to her house after I saw her doing it.

So you wouldn't mind eating a salad that had been washed in said sink p, before it had been bleached in the evening, IceNoSlice?

This is horrible, but then I have seen people bath dogs in kitchen sinks in the UK.!
He will have to put a face on it though,as they will be very hurt if you decline the invite...bbq flames will kill the germs!

I'm not really sure if either of you are BU, its a perception... urine is sterile, however it is an excellent growing place for bugs...in food and health care settings there is always a seperate waste sink because of things like the 'splash back' effect and risks such as a biogel forming, which means tiny spots of urine could be splashed up onto the tap including any microorganisms they contain or grow in the pipes, ...worse case Ecoli....not something I would want on my kitchen sink...but then if any of us went to the effort of swabbing our shower heads taps etc we are likely to find they are colonised by a wide variety of bugs including pseudomonas...eeek the world is so gross sometimes....reaches for the alcohol gel..

It's not something I would do but it wouldn't stop me going to the bbq

Urine is sterile in the body ( unless you have a water infection) It can be contaminated from bacteria on the outside of the body on the way out, but unless its sitting in the potty for hours then the bacteria wouldnt have a chance to muliply that much.
Saying that. I wouldnt want to eat salad at a barbecue that she has washed in that sink. but no it wont do you any harm, its just not pleasant.

Yikes. Genuinely divisive thread! Obviously I agree with the more "relaxed" posters, whilst DP still leaning towards sterilising all communal areas.... This is ironic, given his very laod back attitude towards cleaning OUR house! Wink

Kitchen sinks have, on average, more bacteria growing in them than toilets (apparently). I very much doubt the odd wee from a potty is going to make much difference.

Thing is, the reason we clean is to get rid of dirt and bacteria. There's nothing extra-clingy and special about the germs from bodily fluids, much as our minds may tell us differently. The sink isn't permanently soiled by a potty.

Your dh is being overly precious.

Urine is sterile until it reaches the uretha. So once it is out of the body, into what ever receptacle it is not!
