I think I may just have found another. Come on Mumsnetters. Lets send some emails to this ridiculous advert. £25 a week pocket money to do childcare for a 4 year old. £25!

Also, re the jersey ad, why is it relevant that english schools in jersey are very expensive? Ok...so tell us you have lots on money, then offer a ridiculously low wage. I also know how expensive food is in Jersey.

JacqueslePeacock Thu 20-Jun-13 20:01:27

I was wondering that too. Does she expect the au pairs to teach the kids English, as the schools are unaffordable??

There's a real winner out there if you're looking for a job in Brighton. 120 a week for live-out, 12-13 hours a day four days a week. But you get "free food" while working. When the parents go off on trips together you get to run the show, despite not living with them. But according to Daisy it's a really great job because the kids are lovely. If you say so Daisy...
The slave couple job pans out to $105 a week per person minus food. Minimum wage for au pairs is $75 per week, and I think most people can't live off $30 worth of food a week. What the male au pair is asked to do is outside of the au pair guidelines. What these cheapos need is a gardener. The room doesn't cost them any extra wether they have one or five au pairs in there.

This one's even better:

www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/au-pair-wanted-for-summer-sailing-in-the-croatian-islands/1022029536

3 months sailing round the med from Croatia on a yacht in exchange for doing a bit of light housework and babysitting.

ZenOfPetals Thu 20-Jun-13 20:04:14

I was also thinking the food there must be costly. And why post a picture of yourselves (the mom and dad)? Maybe some disgruntled employee has posted this in retaliation

That Jersey Mum sounds odd! the bit about the daughter being on the trampoline like a 4 year old! And the island is 5miles wide, they live in the middle.so a car is a must?based on that the beach is 2.5miles away. I live 2 miles from town.centre, often walk much further, as do dc. Not sure why a car is essential!

HoneyStepMummy Thu 20-Jun-13 20:10:12

How the heck are you supposed to take care of your own food on a boat??? They want a photo because they only want someone who'll look good in a bikini.
Honestly, I can't think of anything more unsafe than going on a sailing trip with a bunch on strangers and their brats kids.

ZZZenagain Thu 20-Jun-13 20:11:16

Jersey - she wrote they needed to speak good English and then mentioned that English schools are expensive there. I think she is assuming non native speakers will apply since her current couple are from Hungary and is warning them that they wouldn't be able to afford English courses at a language school there.

HoneyStepMummy Thu 20-Jun-13 20:13:33

How is the female Jersey au pair supposed the watch trampolining Alice, cook, clean, do laundry and iron at the same time??

ZZZenagain Thu 20-Jun-13 20:14:26

maybe the aupair isn't to join in family meals so the food is there on the boat but she needs to fix her meals herself?

Don't think I would want my dd being an au pair to people I don't know tbh

BatmanLovesAllan Thu 20-Jun-13 20:16:14

Everything about the Jersey one irked me:

* the casual sexism
* the low wage
* the arrogance of the statement "one tank of fuel is enough for a month", implying if you need any more you're clearly yahooing about the island
* the picture of the mum and dad - nobody cares what you look like
* the constant lttile stealth boasts re: money, juxtaposed with some really stingy comments (petrol, food etc)

HoneyStepMummy Thu 20-Jun-13 20:22:54

Also it's 6 days a week because DH likes to time to himself on Saturdays. Plus 2-3 nights babysitting. The microwave and fridge are in the bedroom because yup, that's where the au pairs will be cooking and eating. And forget about paying for language school, because you won't be able to afford it on whatever's left after buying your food.
One tank of petrol a month!! Is this to be used for school runs too?

I want to go to the one in France!

gindrinker Thu 20-Jun-13 20:32:19

Do people think au pair is just another name for cheap nanny/ slave?
I thought the idea was 'youngish woman, maybe on a gap year (before or after uni) to look after the children before and after school, load the dish washer and put the laundry on. Sort of like an exchange student. During the day they'd go to college and learn English or learn about UK culture by drinking coffee with other au pairs, be fed and watered by the family and treated like a guest?'

frillyflower Thu 20-Jun-13 20:37:02

I feel quite upset that some poor couple might have to do that Jersey one. Some people are just vile.

Notgoingto Thu 20-Jun-13 20:40:32

The picture of the mum and dad in the jersey one is awful, too. Does she think she's fooling anyone with that massive fake diamond necklace?

Sleepyhoglet the London one was sounding good until I realised it was 72 hours a week plus some babysitting. But you do get "breaks" what, to o to the toilet?

Optimist1 Thu 20-Jun-13 20:42:56

Original advert has been withdrawn from the website - well done, MN activists!!

IOnlyNameChangeInACrisis Thu 20-Jun-13 20:49:50

Peeps, why are you going to the effort of messaging the deluded people who've posted the ads? Like any market, if the ad/job sucks, no-one will apply for it.

frillyflower Thu 20-Jun-13 20:49:56

The Jersey dad had a very well polished face. Just saying.

ZenOfPetals Thu 20-Jun-13 20:50:22

I wonder if any of these mothers are on MN?

JacqueslePeacock Thu 20-Jun-13 20:55:51

Because we're afraid people will apply for them! Perhaps if enough people message the advert-posters, they might get the idea they need to start paying a living wage...

ZenOfPetals Thu 20-Jun-13 21:00:11

If one of the mothers from Gumtree stumbled upon this thread, would they feel mortified, or justified- as in, "But my house is SO lovely, and I have worked so hard to get it! But my kids are so lovely, and such little work"

whois Thu 20-Jun-13 21:03:47

Fuck that jersey one is redic!

frillyflower Thu 20-Jun-13 21:08:36

I just the the thought of some poor couple cooped up in their bedroom microwaving some food they have bought for themselves while mr and mrs Shiny Showoff swan about. Ugh.

MrsHuxtable Thu 20-Jun-13 21:10:03

The French dad is hot!
