AIBU?

to think this supermarket delivery service is ridiculous!!

Got my delivery from Sainsbury's earlier this afternoon. I've ordered a few times and all has been great so far. Anyway this time there are 2 substitutions:

  1. Ordered 800g of chicken (2 lots of 400g), wasn't available so I got given 200g of chicken strips.
  2. Ordered 40x size 3 normal nappies, got given 11x size 5-6 swimming nappies.

The nappies weren't that much of a problem to me as I still have lots left, but obviously that substitution is totally inappropriate. However the chicken was for a meal tonight for 4 people, plus it was part of a multibuy discount which means I've actually paid more for the 200g strips than the 2 packs I originally ordered.

The delivery driver was mortified, we had a bit of a giggle on the doorstep at how ridiculous the substitutions were!

So...I had to go to the same supermarket anyway to get more chicken for tonight, took dd (16w) with me which kind of defeated the object of home delivery, got to the aisle and there was the exact chicken I ordered but was apparently out of stock! And lo and behold, the nappies were there too!

AIBU to complain as I had to go to the supermarket anyway? The fact that most of it was delivered has saved me time and meant that I didn't have to load and unload most of the shopping but the stupid substitutions have really inconvenienced me...! I got free delivery as I had a voucher so I feel really cheeky putting in a complaint as I didn't pay for delivery in the first place!

Perhaps they had received a delivery between picking and you going?

YANBU to think they are rubbish substitutions as they are. But the online deliveries don't come directly off the shelf in your local store do they? I presumed they came from somewhere else, a main holding store perhaps :s

This is the risk you take if you accept substitutions though. When I shopped online with Sainsburys I always ticked the 'no substitutions' box and I always received everything I'd ordered.

The delivery came from my local store and went through the till 20 minutes before it arrived on my doorstep, according to the receipt.

Will definitely tick no substitutions in the future, thanks hidden!

Gosh that is ridiculous then and yes I'd complain, in a nice way, and want an explanation tbh. How odd.

The delivery will not necessarily have come from the same store. I have a supermarket 2 mins away, but deliveries come from the store 10 miles away.

I would assume their delivery comes from a warehouse, not the store. But agree, silly substitutions. I wouldn't say that's worthy of a complaint, that's the risk you take when you shop online.

The deliveries normally come from the store. I regularly see the pickers when I go to my local store.

You know that even if you tick that you want substitutions, you're not obligated to accept them? You can send back anything you want and they'll refund it. Have done it before myself

Swim nappies??

Ffs!

Yes they definitely come from the local store. I think I will ring and say something just to hopefully avoid this kind of thing happening again, although if I tick 'no substitutions' then hopefully that'll take care of it too...where I live there are lots of mums who use the delivery service because they don't drive and if the nappy mistake happened to them when they'd run out then that could be a big issue for them.

And squitten I didn't accept the substitutions as the nappies were of no use and the 200g chicken was more expensive than the 800g I'd bought. Same brand, just not in the multibuy deal. Last time they substituted red wine for rosé wine, that was bad enough!!

The pickers see what the customer instore sees, I'm guessing there was a delivery inbetween. Also bear I mind that the picker does everything in 'zones' so your chilled shop may have been done much earlier today along with five other shops at the same time. I think people think the picker goes around with a shopping trolley and a shopping list for one person! (I don't work for Sainsbugs but I do know a bit about online shopping) Bizarre subs there, obvs done by someone without a clue, could even have been the driver!

I ordered 20 tins of tomatoes (only shop once a month) and they delivered 20 bottles of ketchup!! Don't accept any substitutions anymore.

I shop with Sainsburys online every week give or take, I agree some substitutions are totally ridiculous, I once ordered un-waxed lemons and was delivered lemon bleach!

However if you ring the freephone helpline at the top of your a4 printout they are very helpful, will usually issue a £5.00 online voucher for any inconvenience too. If they have a driver in your area at some time that day they will also on occasion re-deliver missing items too.

yes they are ridiculous substitutions!
but they may well have replenished stock inbetween due to delivery or otherwise but I still think you should bring to their attention how silly the subs were

I once had a weight watchers pizza substituted for a deep pan stuffed crust extra cheese calorie-fest, plus other ludicrous stuff - I just say no substitutes these days!

Oh and at Christmas (also my birthday)I had ordered a very expensive treat bottle of Veuve champagne at £35...this was substituted with Lambrini.

I ordered online for the first time in years. Won't do it again. Not just for silly subs but it was late, full of carriers when we requested none and other things ignored.

The 2 large joints of meat we'd ordered were replaced by 2 small joints that weren't even the weight of a full one, so Sunday lunch was nearly off. 300g of sweet potato was replaced with 1.2kg of root mashing veg.

However that wasn't as bad as an old colleague who'd pre ordered a n Xmas turkey and was delivered 6 pints of milk.

When pregnant with DS I ordered organic fish fingers for myself from Sainsburys. Instead I received highly processed fish shaped "bites"! The delivery driver rushed off as soon as he dropped off the bags without giving me a chance to check the receipt. I ate them but did giggle at the thought process in making the substitution!

Asda once sent me Tena Lady instead of nappies. I know most parents think their kids are advanced but I felt that was taking the piss a bit

Report
chickenliversfortea · 18/06/2013 19:06

Asda order yesterday had a chicken twice the size ordered and the wrong wine in the 3 for £10 offer. I only checked the substitutions at the door- which were all better than my original products so the delivery driver had gone.
They refunded the extra cost of chicken and the full price (not the offer price) for the wine. No question no quibble.
So that's £8 saved. Brilliant.
And I got 78p back from the 10% cheaper price guarantee .

So definitely complain and pick your substitutions wisely ie don't ask for them on things you really need but do tick them for everything else.
