to want to spend some of my (hard-earned) bonus on a handbag?

Even though we have a baby arriving in about 3 months and I should be saving for a new house?

It depends on how much it costs I suppose

But it wouldn't be a priority for me in your position.

Tough one....I mean, spend over £500 and that's, like, a pram. You'll look good but putting the baby in a mulberry will wreck your back.

Surely it depends on the handbag? Grin

Rule in our house is its your bonus, you spend it (or a little of it) on what you want.

I think it depends on your financial position and how much the handbag is. YANBU to want to buy yourself a little treat if you can afford it.

But there are threads on here bashing dads-to-be who are spending money on games consoles/ unnecessary items when they should be prioritising the needs of the family.

I probably would. I have a bit of a thing for handbags Blush - and you can always stick it on eBay when you find out its incompatible with a puking shitting permanently sticky new baby Grin

Smile

thanks all. I did wonder about putting the baby in a mulberry but I don't think it would suit a boy child. Grin

In context I think I'd want to spend about 5-10% of the after tax amount.

Already bought the buggy. More the paying off the mortgage kind of thinking for me.

YABU, but I think you know that. Imagine if a man had posted this (except with something more masculine than a handbag!) He'd be carbonised!

oh and FYI I am the breadwinner in the house. DH works for himself and earns little but will be the SAHD when I go back to work.

As long as you don't have debt to pay off, YANBU.

You know you could just buy a designer changing bag instead, that way, there's no guilt factor because you need it for the baby.

I think those men that get a roasting are the ones buying games consoles and saying they're too skint to buy nappies and wipes, or are refusing to give their partner money for small items.

OP if you can afford it without making cuts anywhere necessary, do it and enjoy it.

Actually - SybilRamkin's response has made me more set to do it than ever.

John lewis here I come!

Definitely get it. Not quite the same but i spent my bobus of a pimped up bugaboo (justifying it because i'd never spent more than £15 quid on a handbag). Loved every minute of pushing that pram but bit sad now ds has grown out of it. Choose well and the bag will last forever.

YANBU
I bought a black Mulberry when I was pregnant 6 years ago and still use it almost every day and love it. To be fair I bought it in the sale at 50% off.
I say treat yourself.

Bowlersarm · 23/05/2013 18:08

Oh treat yourself. You could always auction it later if you need some money Smile

You could compromise and wait until the summer sales? Might not suit though if you want a "classic" style that's never reduced.

I'd go for it at 5-10% of the bonus, but there's plenty of more sensible women who wouldn't. This isn't like that dick with the 8k bike from last week.

Get it, you can think of it while you --feel like you're shitting a knife- push the baby out.

10% is very little really.

I'm not really sure what that ^^ has to do with it?

Either way, it's kind of a personal matter as only you know your true state of finances IYSWIM.

Mulberry Rosie baby bag or Anya Hindmarch Oakley?

The Rosie would work as a 'normal' handbag pre, post and during baby bags, the Oakley less so as it has visibly labelled sections.

Do you already have any DCs? Just thinking that the kind of handbag you will want for the first few years might be different than you would choose now. Bigger. Then you won't need a hideous changing bag.

No DCs already. Making the most of my last summer without a sprog. :)
