I used to think that I was a good writer. But, since joining MN, I have to face the sad realisation that this is untrue. If I comment on a thread, it dies, and if I start a thread, no one answers! I give up. I know I am a good reader, I will stick to that from now on....

Ooooh it's even worse when you start a thread and someone gives you a biscuit <--example, not real.

I mean Passive/Aggressive or WHAT.
Just don't reply if you don't like it or write something to say "That's tosh"

I'd like to shove the donoughts right up their arses and To The Best Of My Knowledge I haven't sent one

You need to start a controversial thread.

Disabled parking, breast v bottle, tree hugging attachment parent v rigid routine etc etc.

Posters who comment on others spelling and grammar are the smug superior types who got their heads flushed down the big at my school.

I am very commen.

Zen: I have bumped and then replied.
Poor kids.

Obviously bog not big!

Eddings Sun 19-May-13 18:34:34

I'm the same have lurked for a couple of years, joined up last year & posted this year.

It was very personal to me but I guess a done to death topic as I got very few replies, so it wasnt at all successful & I still havent been able to decide to do the thing I was asking advice about..

Your thread has brought me out of hibernation..... we are not alone :-)

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 18:36:06

Maybe controversy plus extreme typos would make an impact?

As a reader of MN, please critique- what did I do wrong with my earlier thread?

Shakey1500 Sun 19-May-13 18:38:43

Ye Gads I've kllled tons of threads!

kim147 Sun 19-May-13 18:39:18

It's all in the title - you've got to catch the attention grin

I do marketing emails for my company. I know it's the heading that gets the attention. I can see the open rate and it's amazing what factors affect the open rate:

Time of week.
Time of day
Subject heading

I can get 3% open rate through to 15% (my best yet).

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 18:45:36

Maybe people read my threads, but don't answer. Or maybe the titles are so bad no one reads them!

Yes, Eddings, I wondered if my choice of topics were overdone. It's just if a query/ topic is important to you, it is natural to think it will be at least interesting to other people

maddening Sun 19-May-13 18:52:49

I am a fellow thread killer - I look in my I'm on section and am often the last post. Sorry if I have killed your thread!

kim147 Sun 19-May-13 18:53:42

Makes maddening feel better.

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 18:59:32

I am so insecure about posting that, after having created this thread, I noticed the BIG typos, so asked to have it removed. Now, I have asked for it to not be removed, as some of you kind respondents may think you killed it!

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:01:28

As Bowlersarm said earlier...

Eddings Sun 19-May-13 19:14:26

I did think I should have lied in my title....

child space parking wars & should I take my child out with the pox are done to death but still often get pages of replies

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:16:39

but now, someone has asked what should they order from chinese, and that topic might run for weeks

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:22:06

while weeks ago, I started one titled "Inspired by National Geographic" which I actually considered quite deep and inspired- look at it for an example of a thread failure

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:23:28

maybe I am too whingey

kim147 Sun 19-May-13 19:24:14

MN can do wonders for your self esteem - or it can make you wonder if anyone is out there.

It's a tough place at times.

I've started threads which go to 1000 posts, some where I really needed to talk but got no replies and some where they just died.

It's the chortle-chortle Mallory Towers ones that get me.

It's an Enid Blyton Story about a girls' boarding school (AFAIK, I;ve never actually read it) written about 50 years ago.
But people post in all seriousness (but tongue in cheek serious IYSWIM)

My DD doesn;t even read them. <<sigh..>>

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:31:32

Yes, it is mysterious- what people respond to. Although, sometimes I read one that could be so serious and important that I feel scared to reply- maybe I won't be sensitive enough, or knowledgeable enough- to contribute

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:32:12

One post, I mean. Not one Mallory Towers, never read them

MiniTheMinx Sun 19-May-13 19:37:15

I have just seen and responded on your other thread.......it's almost certainly dead now grin

ZenOfPetals Sun 19-May-13 19:40:16

Thanks, Mini. We shall see. What do you think was wrong with that thread, and the National Geographic one, to start with?

marjproops Sun 19-May-13 19:41:57

lol I was thinking of starting a thread about this very thing!

Ive started a couple that went nowhere and others where it snowballed.

Ive seen some threads with maybe 2 posters and thats it.

MiniTheMinx Sun 19-May-13 19:44:21

Oh I haven't seen the national geo one. I'll take a look.

This thread is not accepting new messages.
