not understand why women can't spell anymore

To be fair I haven't really noticed this til I became pregnant and started using mumsnet/fb/text message more but when did half of women completely lose the ability to spell words correctly. I mean sometimes I have no idea what the heck is going on. I mean is their keyboard broke or are they getting charged by the letter?

Example someone please translate this for me: "js rushed home to lie don its buggin me im not abin much luck in this pregnancy at all breezed throu my others reali it mst b age"

or this " i can hardly see at miih" what the heck is a miih?

I take it this is not a young lady thing because this woman is in her 40s. My own mother constantly struggles with threw/through or you're/your. Did I miss some sort of revolution in language some time ago?

Just women? OK then. Must be the pink bic pens addling our poor ikkle girly brains.

CogitoErgoSometimes Thu 16-May-13 11:03:13

You'll have heard of the text message....? I've no idea what a 'miih' is either but I'm so old and pedantic my text messages are usually written in full complete with punctuation. Others have embraced the shorthand...

no, not more evidence that I'm a man?

"I mean is their keyboard broke..."

Maybe, but more likely it's broken...

LoveItLongTime Thu 16-May-13 11:06:00

Do you mean 'any more'?

TheVermiciousKnid Thu 16-May-13 11:06:15

I guess you don't want us to point out the mistakes in your post? wink

Handy tip, OP: if you post to criticise somebody's spelling/grammar/punctuation (or in this case, more than half the population's spelling etc), you'd better make sure your post is flawless.

This is a guess at the sentence you posted above:
"js rushed home to lie don its buggin me im not abin much luck in this pregnancy at all breezed throu my others reali it mst b age"

Just rushed home to lie down. It's bugging me. I'm not having much luck in this pregnancy at all. Breezed through my others, really/realise it must be age".

LOL @ MommaTJ - I loved the customer feedback on the Amazon site about those pens. Sheer brilliance!

This isn't just women and it isn't new. Far from being a "lost ability" I think it is an ability that many people never had in the first place. Add to that text messaging where shortening words had an advantage (not so much these days), combined with some people who are perhaps not so adept at using a keyboard, then I don't think there is much that is shocking about it.

LoveItLongTime Thu 16-May-13 11:09:09

Also, you of course mean 'until' or ' 'til', don't you?

AnAirOfHope Thu 16-May-13 11:09:23

Fuck i thought i could not spell because im dyslexic but in fact its because im a lady wink

EuroShaggleton Thu 16-May-13 11:09:26

Heh. Just heh.

Phone keypads and computers = stupid autocorrects and mis-typing due to letters being very closely-spaced on phones.

A whole generation use 'text-speak'. Whilst I dislike it, it is nonetheless an evolution of language.

Many - no, most - posters are articulate as type well, so YABU.

Combination of small smartphone keypad typos/left-overs from text- speak when users had to use the old-style keypads?

I'm curious though...why do you equate this problem to just women? Do you converse with men through the medium of keyboards/smartphone keypads/tablets etc and find their spelling and grammar to be perfect?

nowt to do wit them pens, I git one of mi ubby for mi b'day, I wus shit wit spellin before and 'm still shit wit spellin know. I fink it cause I weren't teached proper spellin, grammer thou I'm shit hot on.

wigglesrock Thu 16-May-13 11:13:49

I know I can spell but sometimes I get distracted by my breasts - that help?

TwoFourSixOhOne Thu 16-May-13 11:13:54

You have no grasp at all of grammar.

I started to correct your post and then realised I would have to completely rewrite it.

So my only further comment is that yes, you did indeed miss some revolution in language. Shame, really.

My husband does all the writing in our house, I'm only capable of washing up and ironing.
hmm
