I promised I would update so here it is.

original thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a1545014-to-be-a-little-suspicious-of-landlord-MIL

Readers digest version. MIL is our landlord, really rubbish one who breaks the law by not maintaining the boiler at all. We had a sort of agreement to buy this house from her when we could afford to but when we got to that point she kept putting off, making excuses.

We've bought a house, moving this weekend. When DH told MIL she had another screaming tantrum and could not believe what we're doing to her. She's currently not speaking to us.

MoreBeta nailed the situation in his first post of that thread. The mortgage on this house is large, none of the capital has been paid off and she did expect us to take on responsibility for her debts of which this house has seen absolutely no benefit from.

I remember your thread!

Very glad you have bought a house of your own (and not MILs).

Thanks for the update.
It's brilliant to hear that you are going to have a new home that you will be able to make sure is safe for your family.
Good luck with the moving and enjoy the new house.

I remember it too. Glad to see this update, good for you!!!

Then let her stop and not speak to you. She was stupid. That's her lookout and not yours. You have your own financial interests to look after. Move into your new home and enjoy it.

Stuff her. She knew damn well what she was doing and tried to compromise her own child and his family's financial well-being to fund it.

Well done.

Thanks for the update. Good luck with your move & I hope you'll be very happy in your new home.
Let MIL sort out her own mess - she's been trying to screw you over for years.

Good for you. I love a good update smile

thanks smile I am so glad I posted that AIBU otherwise I might just have gone along with it and lost all our savings and got stuck with a house that needs tens of thousands spending on it, plus a huge load of debt.

Just read through the original thread - I think you've had a lucky escape. Your DH ought to be very grateful to you for getting him out of that situation.

Xiaoxiong Mon 06-May-13 16:16:48

I remember your thread! Thanks for coming back and updating us and congratulations on your new home and new life without MIL dragging you down.

How is your DH taking it, having now seen his mother's true colours?

KeepYerTitsIn Mon 06-May-13 16:21:14

I remember your original thread, and I'm really glad for you that you've done what suits you, and not her. She sounds like a very selfish woman. And congratulations, enjoy your little boy!

DoodleAlley Mon 06-May-13 16:23:25

Well done you for prioritising your family.

MardyBra Mon 06-May-13 16:25:54

It's lovely when people come back to update. I also remember the original thread but mainly lurked afaik as others were doing such a good job of passing on advice. Congratulations on your new home and baby.

Xiaxiong, he's upset, annoyed at himself for being passive, angry at being lied too, sad that he's lost the relationship he had with her. It is difficult for him.
