AIBU?

To think that music videos will eventually depict real sex acts?

Not my view, but that of DH, said in a jokey way but it got me thinking.

It saddens me what young girls and boys can see in music videos on any of the easily accessible channels. I'm thinking of Rhianna (because of the furore over that 11 year old on BGT) but there are many other terrible examples like Kesha (or whatever the bloody hell she calls herself with that Dollar sign in her name) Christina Aguilara, Britney etc, etc. It's like they're competing to shock more and more - do they have to do this to sell music??

Also, just saw a very 'lively' debate on This Morning about educating 5 year olds about Pornography and it got me thinking about the whole thing.

Since having DD, I've become much more Mary Whitehouse about things like music videos (so has DH, hence his comment)

I really do sound like an 80 year old now! :)

The producers of these videos push the boundaries a little more each time. When no one objects it becomes acceptable to push it a bit further the next time.

I actually believe it's all part of a wider effort to turn us all into savages. Seriously. But then I'm a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist. You'll all be laughing on the other side of your faces one day

Probably. I no longer listen to the radio 1 and local stations around children the content even in the middle of the day is disgusting.

Well, it's a logical conclusion. Songs used to just allude to sex acts but gradually it got more and more explicit to now where they are completely explicit.

I think your dh is right, sex acts will probably be shown. It is pretty sad that musicians/producers feel this is necessary to sell music and videos.

In the 50s Shirley Bassey got banned from the BBC for singing "Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me, Thrill Me Honey Honey Thrill Me" !!

Nowadays they'll play anything, it seems.

When I was in university and used to suffer from insomnia I remember putting on music channels one night to watch some music videos. Big mistake. There were dance music videos (quite popular dance music that was being played on radio 1) and hip hop videos with completely topless women wearing thongs and jumping around so their boobs jiggled, pretending to perform sexual acts on rappers/singers and kissing other women with tongues.

I watched for about 20 minutes shocked that these mainstream songs had x rated videos made.

I think your dh is absolutely right. Like LittleBairn, I don't listen to radio 1 and most pop songs with my 5 year old around either. They contain so much filth in the lyrics aswell.

Probably.

DS1 (13) is not allowed to watch the music video channels.

Not a Rammstein fan then? Their video for 'pussy' is interesting. Wink

I'm sure there is another from a few years ago - some singer who was naked and supposedly (out of shot) receiving oral sex while filming the video. I can remember when I was younger being desparate for music channels to watch videos and now I'm old enough to pay for that, it's the last thing I have on TV for the reasons already stated. My DD is 8 and I do not want her view of the world based upon the awful videos being churned out with music. old gimmer here too

We used to have cable music TV. We were Shock when we found out that we had to put in our Adult identification code to watch a U2 video which featured Bono smoking a cheroot (the act of smoking made it an 18 certificate video), but no such verification needed to watch Lady Gaga prance around with two small pieces of tape covering her nipples, and Beyonce using a gun and motorcycle as a sex toy. It's a very bizarre world that we live in.

MN's own Justine has already been in discussion with no.10 and music industry people on this topic.
My view is that with artists increasingly reliant on brands to pony up the cash to make videos, they should in theory become "safer" - if BMW want their car in a video, they want as many eyeballs as possible on it and they want it to reflect their brand - so not controversial for the wrong reasons. This may be a naive view, I realise.

We have the music channels on in the background on Friday nights (crisps & dips night chez McTart!) They're usually quite tame but OH did have to quickly switch over when the latest Nicki Minaj video came on. Lots of nearly naked shots and just very provocative.

I'm no prude and listen to my own music when the kids are around but nearly full-on nudity at 8pm is something I'm not too keen for my two (8 and 6) to see!

It's lyrics in our house - they are becoming increasingly & frequently anglo saxon. I swear like a sailor at work because I can but don't appreciate other people undoing my good work when the radio's on for the school run, and then it leaves Pop Party as the only suitable listening option.

I stick to radio 4 and 6 for background, and don't watch music channels or videos. When ds is around I might listen to some Rammstein or Apocalyptica because I'm happy he doesn't understand German Grin.

Wu Tang etc I keep for headphones in the office. Spreadsheets are very dull things.

Yanbu.

I read the title and immediately thought of Rammstein and the Pussy video. Got beaten to it Grin

And have you read the english lyrics to Ich Tu Dir Weh? Veeeerrrry interesting. But then, Rammstein have a deliberately provocative image, whereas many of the mainstream acts seem to just want to normalise things.

So while I, as an adult, am happy to listen to provocative stuff, I do care about what the DCs listen to. I talk to DD about the mainstream stuff she likes and how the videos treat women, etc. I think she's beginning to understand a little.

I was AGOG the other month when in the house, happily hoovering and singing along to "Dedication To My Ex".

"TELL ME WHERE'D THAT LOVIN' GO! I MISS THAT LOVING! THAT......hang on, what? rewinds tv OH MY GOD ITS ABOUT HER PUSSY?!?!"

DP was in stitches. I was absolutely slackjawed. I no longer listen to explicit versions of pop songs that I thought were acceptable for smaller ears!

I did a second take at Lana Del Rey's "My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola"... I thought, wow, she must have a yeast infection or something...

Rammstein do an awesome concert. When they sang the Pussy song Till was riding a giant penis cannon and spraying us all in bubble bath semen... I might not want my kids to see that, but it was the best concert I ever went to...

Well. I was talking with a Danish person about this the other day. They think brits are really prudish about nudity and sexuality. Shame is more damaging than a load of boobies.

At root, the most damaging thing is how women in the vids HAVE to be sexy and 'available'. Even when they're being all empowered etc it seems they're only empowered enough to dress in a way which is provocative to men.

And vids where a male star is singing - all women delegated to mute, fawning and passive objects.

It's so undiverse - it's making this normal - very limited depiction of what it means to be an attractive woman. Get yer hot pants on and present your backside.
