to ask if the Nexplanon contraceptive implant turned anyone else crazy?

I am getting it out soon and I hope that my mood will improve. It has honestly turned me into a psycho. I don't know why I have left it so long - I guess I was just wondering if things would settle down - but it's been six months now and I am a tearful, vile tempered horror who has horrific mood swings - I promise, I was not like that before in case anyone is wondering that.

I am surprised my DH has not divorced me. I burst into tears at the slightest provocation and go from being in a perfectly ok mood to absolutely furious and raging over something really small. I am frightening myself. I don't think my DH is convinced it's the implant, I think he thinks I have PND but I was absolutely fine when I got the thing put in and noticed immediately a difference, I was suddenly snapping at our children and crying all the time. It seems to be getting worse, too. Yesterday I was sitting with my DH and two DCs and feeling so low, I lay down on the sofa and covered myself with a blanket and refused to move. Actually refused, just lay crying under the blanket. What a freak. I am ashamed of myself and feel so useless and like the shittest mother and wife in the world. I need to hear other people's stories of returning to normal after getting the implant out, if they have any?

Thanks for reading.

Can't say I've had personal experience of this but hormonal contraception is well known for affecting women's emotional wellbeing, although it is (fortunately) not particularly common (although not that rare either).

Hope you feel better soon.

I had this put in when my middle son was 5 months, after being given a bit of a hard sell by gp. I went from a happy, coping mum of two to a tearful and disengaged wreck, within a week. I started putting weight on, crying all the time, dreaded the baby crying, and sex life hit the deck. It was like someone had turned the lights off on my whole life. Also bled like day 1 of AF the whole time. After 6 weeks i demanded gp remove it, and had a real battle to get her to do it. Eventually she agreed, and after gp huffed out of the room, the practice nurse told me she felt they shouldnt be given to postnatal women as they caused/mimicked PND, with women ending up on anti-d's. the good news is, within two days of it being out i started to recover.

Thanks Pale, I'm sorry to hear you had such a hard time but relieved to hear it's not just me. Glad you feel better now. If GP refuses I feel like cutting it out myself!

I had that problem with the Implanon implant. Vile.

It did make me slightly more 'snappy' I think it was described as.
But only for about a month then it all settled down.
Back to normal and no periods - yeah!
Sorry it hasn't been so great for you.
If it's been 6 months then I think you are right to get it removed.
Hope it puts everything right in no time!

I didn't have that problem with it, but the pill made me really bad tempered. I suppose it's the risk we take with hormonal contraception. Have it out and try something else.

Yes! You just described me a few months ago. I told my gp I would cut the thing out myself if he didn't, luckily he took pity on me. I was back to my old self within a few days of it coming out. Cerazette had exactly the same effect on me.

yes!! it came out at the end of feb and now i am on nothing...no kids yet but hoping! i nearly left my partner 4 months ago over something silly that seemed major in my mind because my mood swings were out of control.

I have the Nexplanon and I'm pretty happy with it. I've had it for a year and I haven't noticed an effect on my mood. Luckily I don't generally have problems with hormonal contraception, but I know it varies with different women.

Do make sure you look up a reliable replacement contraceptive though, if you don't want to ttc. I hear so many stories about women coming off hormonal contraceptives because it caused mood swings/weight gain - then they end up with an unexpected pg which will also bring mood swings and weight gain!

YANBU. I had the same reaction to cerazette. Truly horrendous.
Stopped taking it and was back to normal within a week.

Me, I was exactly the same as you describe. It took a fucking age before they finally took it out as well. They kept giving excuses, and this was my local family planning centre. I threatened to cut it out myself in the end, they did it pretty swiftly after that.

Then I was put on Cerazette and gained 3 stone, that also turned me into a raging lunatic. Came off it after 6 months and lost 2.5 stone in 2 months. I've stayed away from hormonal contraception ever since. Thankfully DH had the snip last year so I don't have to worry any more.

Hope you get it out soon.

I've had nexplanon in for three weeks. I've had non stop bleeding brown pink and red all different days. My feet have swollen so badly they kill along with my hands. I feel nuaseous, back pain, fatigue, stomach aches and the latest I started to lactate. Producing milk. I gave birth to my son 14ms ago. That's is just the physical end of it. I'm constantly snapping. For instance, my son 14m had to brush his teeth. He walks around with it so tonight I couldn't find it. I started freaking out going bat shit crazy mad screaming that I xoulsnt find it then broke down into tears sobbing. I scream a lot over silly things, I cry over things that aren't the slightest bit sad. Doctors apt this Monday to see if I should keep it in or take it out.

Hmmm I've been toying with the idea of the implant after this one's born, I may rethink...Cerazette sent me batshit crazy, absolutely psycho infact. I was horrendous, I could actually hear the crap coming out of my mouth but was so angry/frustrated it didn't matter, I'd also be so outraged that I was coming out with this shit that it made me madder. I had a permanent knot of tension in the pit of my stomach and just reacted at nothing.I also bled daily. Never again.

Cerazette did it to me too. I was a lunatic. Angry, tearful, short tempered with really dark thoughts. Stopped taking it after just three weeks, three weeks ago. Never ever again.

This happened to me too! Not only was I an utter monster, but I never ever wanted to have sex either - making the whole thing pointless anyway!

I got it removed after having it in for 2 years (!) and after about 6 months I began to return to my normal self.

Same thing happened with Cerazette - now we just rely on condoms.

I hated my nexplanon! (Had the implanon before that which was just as bad) I put up with the bloody thing for two years and went through really bad mood swings and got really emotional really quick. After about a year my hair started falling out and I was getting bad chest pains. I went to the doctors loads of times and they couldn't figure out what it was. I then started a 6 month long period and was getting so depressed at bleeding everyday for 6 months I went to my local gum clinic and refused to leave until they took it out. All my symptoms disappeared within two days :) I did go straight on the pill when they took it out at the beginning of September and im now 38 weeks pregnant with my first so my experiences with contraception aren't that great Grin

Yep, it made me absolutely nuts!

I was so argumentative and cruel and would go from laughing and joking to taking offence at DP breathing the wrong way.

I was SO hungry too. I gained 3 stone because I was just starving all the time. The implant didn't make me fat, I made me fat, but only because the implant made me so hungry and I couldn't control it!

I didn't have a single period on it, and I often felt sick and tired so spent the year I was on it worried it was failing and I was pregnant, as of course, everything is a symptom of pregnancy if you google it enoughGrin

May I recommend the patch? I've never had such stable moods. On implanon I bled all the itme which made me crazy.

I had the implanon and I was MENTAL. I threw a mug at my (then) boyfriend. Not cool.

I'm still pretty mental. But I only use mugs for tea now.

Cerazette turned me into a raging psycho. Took me screaming and crying and snotting everywhere refusing
To leave the bitch prescribing nurses office until she changed it.
Within two weeks I had dropped a stone, started growing new hair (mine went very thin on cerezette), my boobs deflated a cup size and stopped being agony swollen. I was my happy self again.

The nurse refused to believe it was cerezette and got nasty about it. It was though.

I have just started taking this over a week ago. Pretty worried as I have tried three different combination pills and all have made me depressed/anxious/moody/unreasonable!! Thought this would be the answer for me but maybe not! I have been pill free for over a year and felt so much better. The last couple of days I have suffered with paranoia and anxiety. What I really don't understand is why my gp would prescribe this as I was so anti any pill due to my previous depression (suicidal at times.) Condoms are the way forward!! I hope other people realise how much a pill can change you life.
