am really surprised by the number of people who fall for troll stories on Mumsnet.

Perhaps I have just been around for too long.

Have there been any good ones today? I've not been paying attention. Grin

Good, glad you both agree! Grin

And now, as site seems to be particularly badly infested tonight, I shall retire to bed with the Guardian magazine.

Thanks for replying to my little thread!

I wonder about some threads and can mostly spot them, but the one's that get through and I genuinely post on do make me feel like a prize twat for not noticing.

I don't think say anything on MN I'm not comfortable spilling, but it makes you feel gullible.

I'm usually okay at spotting troll threads and just don't bother posting unless it's very funny.

'don't think I say anything' that should say, doh.

Is there one going that is about a carpark incident?

Not usually to the extent of police involvement.

Report
AgentZigzag · 20/04/2013 23:49

They make up much worse stuff than just police involvement I think Cat, the ones making up things happening to their children and that.

YANBU. Some are easy to spot and some are harder though, and obviously I've got fooled before (having given out way too much personal detail on one which seemed similar to my life...not nice) but some of them are obvious. (Equally, some aren't).

I'm kind of 50/50 with the carpark one, but must admit I'm enjoying it.Grin
Harmless and I like a good argument.
It's the trolls on relationships that I avoid like the plague, you can't say anything disbelieving or all the lovely and kind posters that do believe it will attack you.
I swear there's about three with three different threads given the writing style.

I read the carparking one when it was at about 60 odd posts, do I need to open it to read later to avoid it being deleted/missing what deleted posts say LBE?

i dont think i would spot a troll story tbh ,why would the car park one be a troll story ? what do you have to look for ? im new ish on here and feeling quite naive now .

Zombie gave up on Relationships ages ago. Those trolls are just downright cruel.

I sometimes have a bit of a lurk in relationships, how can you tell who's trolling in those parts?

Report
YouTheCat · 21/04/2013 00:45

I don't venture into Relationships very often.

I am no good at 'discreet' at all. Grin

I just worry that maybe it is real and the person is desperate. We can't know it's fake. What if the person has nobody at all in their life that they can turn to, so they go to the internet and people lay into them?

There's one person I do recognise, who keeps coming back and back and back with variations on a theme. They change their name and they change details like age of child, number of other children, etc, but the skeleton of the story is always the same. I don't think they're lying, but I am not quite sure what they want. I feel really sorry for them.

I like to think I am not thick Grin often I do click report. And often the thread is subsequently deleted Grin so my troldar must be getting better.
