PILs have broken the lid off my kettle

PILs came round today to see DS.

While they were there, I had to pop out to run some errands, and they stayed at my house to look after and play with DS while I was out (they knew I'd have to pop out before they came so not like I sprang it on them or anything BTW).

When I got back, I sat and chatted with them for a while, and then asked if they'd like a cup of tea. MIL asked if I was having one and when I said yes, leapt up, and told me to sit down and relax and that she'd make the drinks.

A bit after they'd gone, I went into the kitchen to make myself another drink, and noticed that the kettle lid wasn't attached to the kettle anymore. The lid is hinged, and should be permanently attached to the kettle. Now it's not, and it won't go back on the kettle. The kettle was fine this morning when I went out.

Something has happened to the kettle when I was out. I'm now suspecting that MIL's offer to make tea was in fact a ploy to delay me finding out that the kettle lid's broken. I'm not all that bothered about the kettle itself - but them not telling me about it is really annoying me.

AIBU to think that if you break something at someone else's house, you should tell them about it?

Yes normally you should tell the owner. Wonder why they felt they couldn't tell you.

yanbu, she was probably embarrassed about it to be fair. I get really pissed off with kettle lids because they all work differently so I can see in my head exactly how it happened!

No, we won't ask them to replace it - it's only a kettle after all, and not a particularly fancy one. We should be able to get a cheap one to replace it, and we've got more disposable income than they do (they're retired).

Well yanbu but I think you ought to buy a new kettle and forget about it. It's hardly the end of the world.

I burned a big ring on MILS countertop....I told her right away and she was like this but on the bright side, she lives abroad and misses us a lot...now she can look at my scorch mark every day and think of us.

First world problem - they were probably too embarrassed to tell you.

Get a new kettle (not expensive) & be happy that you have them around to see & love & enjoy your DCs.

This has happened to me a couple for times. Chip in a new mug, broken vase with the top sat back on so I didn't notice until I went to move it and something else which has escaped my memory.

I wouldn't expect things to be replaced but just the curtesy to tell me what had happened.

I don't care about the kettle. What I care about is that they didn't tell me about it.

And yes, I'm glad that they came to see DS. MIL in particular loves little children and seems happy to play with them for hours on end.

How odd. I would be disappointed if the DC's didn't tell me they had broken something... let alone a grown up.

My FIL once broke my (lovely wedding gift) teapot by forcing the lid on it. Instead of saying 'whoops, so sorry' he announced 'what a shit design, your lucky it lasted this long'.
I told him I would forward his articulated thoughts to Denby .

I did a similar thing once while pet sitting when a friend was on holiday, I was popping round daily to feed the pet and thought I would be nice and do some ironing for her when her washing on the clothes horse had dried so she had less laundry to sort when she came home. I got the ironing board up but couldn't fold it back down and broke it by trying to force it. I put it back in the cupboard and kept quiet but obviously she noticed the ironed clothes and put two and two together, I offered to buy a new one but she laughed it off and said it was okay and I was a fruit loop for not just telling her I had done it by accident, I don't know why I didn't say anything, I guess I was embarrassed at being too daft to work out to how to fold the damn thing.
