AIBU to think I will go to hell for putting a Bible in the recycling?

(75 Posts)

Dh and I are having a huge sort out of all our books. He's already taken a big pile to the charity shop, and we've binned/recycled a load of stuff that wasn't fit for the charity shop. Now we are sorting through some of the other books, and we have thirteen editions of the Bible - one I got when I was christened, ones we got when the dses were dedicated, and various others we have acquired over the years - especially when I was attending a very active evangelical church.

I have decided that I can live without my copy of The Bible in a Year, and dh has put it in the recycling (I made notes in it so can't send it to the charity shop). I am afraid I will go to hell for recycling or binning a bible - AIBU?

Does Jesus not recycle?

BlackeyedSusan Sat 06-Apr-13 15:23:09

you do not go to hell for recycling a Bible.

HairyGrotter Sat 06-Apr-13 15:23:20

YABVU given Hell does not exist and the bible is merely a long winded story. Just another tale so can be lobbed in the bin or recycled (I vote bin, poorly written and boring)

Is it worse to bin than to recycle?

Did you burn it in the back garden naked, whilst simultaneously sacrificing a vestal virgin and the goat you got from your benefits lifestyle?

If not, you're fine.

YouTheCat Sat 06-Apr-13 15:24:58

Or what Magrat said. grin

I feel for you - I am the same, I have a spare couple of bibles and a copy of the Koran that are still on my bookshelves because it feels wrong to put them in recycling

God forgives, I think he'll be pleased it didn't end up in land fill. <polishes halo>

I have a book of Mormon in German, bin or recycle?

WaitingForMe Sat 06-Apr-13 15:29:31

I thought the Koran was a full on hellfire job - they aren't even meant to touch the floor if I remember rightly.

Never heard anything about respect needed for Bibles.

Little point in giving a logical answer here given that organised religion is illogical in the extreme. If putting a bible in the recycling has a profound negative mental effect on you, perhaps you shouldn't do it. Or you should wait until you come to the realisation that organised religion makes no sense and then recycle it.

Whew!

Magrat - thankfully for the neighbours' sanity and eyes, it is too chilly for me to dance naked in the garden here. And I have no goat - though ds1 has bet dh £50 that by the time he (ds1) is 40, he will have kept a goat for a full year.

Well - we are damned together, then, zukiecat!! I would have put Jesus in the cupboard too.

MarvellousYou Sat 06-Apr-13 15:32:36

I have 14 bibles don't you know, its hard to find a strong enough bookcase <checks halo again>

Does that mean that conversely I go to heaven for putting my copy of fifty shades of grey into the recycling rather than inflicting it on anyone else?

HairyGrotter Sat 06-Apr-13 15:35:23

A huge Jesus? Fuck that, I'd have tied stones to it and lobbed it in the river. It's what he would've wanted (if he had existed)

YouTheCat Sat 06-Apr-13 15:35:42

50 Shades should be burnt, just in case some poor soul should get their hands on it.

MagratOfStolat Sat 06-Apr-13 15:35:52

No FeckOff: That you need to burn, if it even will ignite after all the bodily fluids....
wink

FeckOffCup Sat 06-Apr-13 15:38:24

No bodily fluids on mine, sadly egotistical controlling arseholes do not float my boat even if they do have a really really tragic backstory hmm.

HoppinMad Sat 06-Apr-13 15:39:01

Tiger Maybe drop koran off at a local mosque if theres one nearby? I'm sure theyd rather you did that then recycle.

Same for the bibles, take them to a church if they are no longer needed.

MurkyMinotaur Sat 06-Apr-13 15:45:57

Christians believe that the bible's contents are from God and tell us about Jesus. But the actual physical book is just paper and ink. We worship Jesus rather than the bible itself. So absolutely no problem to throw one in the recycling!

SquirrelNuts Sat 06-Apr-13 16:03:35

If thhats the case I'll see you down there, I recycled the one we were given at school when I was 16

What Hoppin said.
