at the end of a difficult day to rejoice that it was a woman who handed down Philpott's sentence?

It's a tiny deal but I am pleased that this misogynist shit got his orders from a woman.

I've no doubt he will be using her gender in an unpleasant way

I've no doubt that he'll be a very frightened man.

Just a shame she sentenced him to less time than a detective got today for stealing drugs from a police evidence storeroom.

Sad

It wasn't long enough though. Six lives. Arson. What the hell was she thinking? What could he possibly ever offer to society? He should be locked away for the rest of his life.

I don't think judges are just allowed to make up random sentences.
She went away, did additional research and followed the limits that are set in law.

He got a life sentence.

A minimum of 15 years, and the Judge had to act within the statutory guidelines.

He will only be considered for parole after 15 years and he may not get it.

So a detective got life for stealing drugs from an evidence room?

Link please?

He was convicted of manslaughter so sentence is limited by law not by the judge

He is not going to find prison too pleasant though, they don't tend to like child killers!

The above explains the sentencing very well.

The detective was sentenced to 16 years - so will probably be out in 8 years. This is a shorter sentence than anyone involved in the arson case.

Good link Widow.

I do wish people would actually bother to read things/listen when issues like this are discussed.

Judges don't just make sentences up off the top of their heads Hmm.

They have to use the statutory rules.

the sex of the judge is irrelevant

Thanks piprabbit.

So Philpott didn't get a shorter sentence than the detective.

Which is what I thought...

I agree Op.
She gave the only sentence she could according to the law, and I bet he fucking hated it coming from a woman.

The detective was sentenced to 23 years.

Just to state that more clearly:

The detective got 16 years

Philpott got life with the recommendation of serving at least 15 years

But he may well not get parole.

Phillpott was sentenced to 30 yrs

Report
PavlovtheCat · 05/04/2013 00:10

that's an excellent explanation of it widow.

It states very clearly that she has given him a harsher sentence with Life serving a minimum of 15yrs than if she had given him 30yrs for which he would only have to serve 15yrs. And that the sentence is one of the heaviest sentences for manslaughter given to date.

She did as much as she could. Well done her.

Salmotrutta · 05/04/2013 00:10

Well even 23 years means the detective will probably be out in 11.

Philpott has to serve at least 15 because he got life.

If he gets out after 15 ill eat my hat.

Philpott was not sentenced to 30 years.

He got life.

Report
piprabbit · 05/04/2013 00:12

My apologies - it was his brother who got 16 years.

23 years is still a lot less than a life sentence.
