AIBU?

To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

Rant over Smile

We bought a 37 inch tv first and it was far too small for our living room, we changed it for a 40 inch and that is about right.
My friends have a 50 inch and it looks bloody ridiculous.

DorcasDelIcatessen · 28/03/2013 09:59

YABU. Watching Jeremy Kyle has never been so good.

ArseAche · 28/03/2013 09:59

yanbu - totally agree. I think it is a status symbol, which to me just states that the owner is a knob. (unless, like you say, the room is of a size of a small cinema)

Portofino · 28/03/2013 09:59

we have 52 inches. it is bloody fab and came with a free goat Grin. the room is quite big though....

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 10:01

gallifrey if you have a huge room I will let you off - what's 3 inches anyway Smile

I also have a friend with a 50 something inch tv - it's along the wall of a really narrow room and you literally can stretch your feet out and touch it when you're sitting on the sofa. It makes me feel nauseous.

I totally agree. We have a 47" that DH couldn't live without. It makes our sitting room feel like a cinema, and not in a good way :(

ArseAche · 28/03/2013 10:01

Aah, well if there is a goat thrown in, then that is fine! {grin]

wankerchief · 28/03/2013 10:01

I think big cars, cushions, minimalist houses, giant fridges are naff naff naff.

Peoples tastes are different.

WandaDoff · 28/03/2013 10:03

We have a 37 inch TV & it looks ok in our medium sized living room.

My sister has a 50 inch TV in her small living room & it looks ridiculous. She hates it but BIL wanted the biggest TV he could afford.

ArseAche · 28/03/2013 10:03

A friend of mine has a 5o something one. The room is long and narrow, We sit opposite it on the thin side iyswim so this farking great thing is only about 10 feet away and you have to literally move your head around to see the whole picture. Makes me laugh every time I go round.

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 10:04

Portifino is there enough room for the goat now though?

And goat or not, unless your room is at least 50ft in any one direction, YABU Grin

Wanda does your BIL have a very small penis?

CaramelLatte · 28/03/2013 10:06

We have a 55" I'm not a knob, really I'm not. Our room is big enough to take it though but I know what you mean if the room really is too small.

Pascha · 28/03/2013 10:07

I have a 26in square CRT telly which is 18 years old. I would sell my goat for a great big flat one. Unfortunately its still going strong, until it breaks, I am doomed to miss the sides of every programme.

Messandmayhem · 28/03/2013 10:08

We have a 40in tv. Our previous one was a 37inch tv, but was about a million years old so was one if those big things with the huge back and a massive bezel (is that the word?) around the screen. The now one takes up much less room.

dreamingbohemian · 28/03/2013 10:09

YANBU

I feel so irrational about this but I think it does look pretty tacky to have a huge TV in a small room.

We have a 19" TV, it's perfect for us as we pretty much just watch DVDs on it but apparently when it eventually breaks it will be really hard to get another TV so small. No one buys small TVs anymore apparently!

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 10:11

I loved my enormous 26 inch 15 year old telly. I was officially fed up when it exploded a few months ago. When we bought a new one, as a mark of protest I refused to fix it to the wall and have stood it on the enormous oak tv unit the old one used to be on - thus taking up just as much space as it used to Grin

I'm still rocking the fat back crt look. I feel quite attached to it really. I learnt all about how crt tv's work in standard grade physics many moons ago so I feel fat back and I have an understanding.

Tailtwister · 28/03/2013 10:11

Depends on the size of the room. Our friends used to make fun of us because our TV was so small! We replaced it with a bigger one (not 27 inch though) and I hate it.

So, YANBU if the TV is so large it dominates the room.

giantpurplepeopleeater · 28/03/2013 10:12

YANBU!!

We have a massive 52 inch monstrosity in our lounge - my DP's. To be fair the room is quite large so it doesn't look massive, but still.

My lovely 26 inch TV (that I used to have in my lounge and worked perfectly well thank you very much!) has been consigned to the spare room. sigh

ivanapoo · 28/03/2013 10:14

We have a 32" in a fairly large sitting room.

We wanted a 28" but they were more expensive!

Now it looks quite small, compared to our friends" giant screens. I admit I don't like to see a TV dominate a room.

TV in the bedroom - now that's naff.

Astr0naut · 28/03/2013 10:17

We've got a 26inch one, although it would have worked out cheaper to get a bigger one, really. It took me ages to get used to how big it seemed, but now I thiknk it's just right.

Dreading when dcs are old enough to care about this sort of thing and want a bigger telly cos all their mates have.

I have a TV in my naff bedroom. I'd love one of those beds that the TV pops up out of the end.

If I win the lottery thats the first thing I'm going to buy.

ParadiseChick · 28/03/2013 10:18

Oh I love my tv in my bedroom. Dh and I proper cuddle up nice and cosy on a cold night watching films or Sunday morning lie ins with the Andrew marr show, coffee and croissants. What could possibly be naff about that?

turkeyboots · 28/03/2013 10:19

Most of my neighbours use their giant tellys in place of curtains. Telly has it back to the window and you cant see round it from the outside. So YANBU.

In-laws all have massive tellys too. Made DD seasick watching Cbebees!
