AIBU?

Video piracy propaganda

Just finished watching a DVD with DH and DS (age 4), at the end of it there was a short 'advert' about pirate DVDs. The video depicted a very scary looking man with eyes of flame working in a forge. DS was so scared by this that he was actually in tears. (we turned it off ASAP, but we were not near the remote at the time so it took a good 30-40 seconds.)

AIBU to think this sort of 'scary' advert should not be on the end of a DVD marked as U? I really feel like writing and complaining!

Not just you.

Its a stupid advert.

Wasn't there one about some bloke called 'dodgy Dave' too?

I have no idea, though it does seem to ring a vague bell.

I was just so upset by my DS's reaction to that advert, he really was so scared! We put on another short DVD after to try to cheer him up a bit and he then started shouting "Turn it off mummy please!!" during the credits as he was so scared he'd see the 'scary man' again!
It really spoiled a wonderful day, I've honestly never seen him so scared by anything!!

My DH says that to him the advert says "Make sure you buy pirate copies of family DVDs by this company in future as then you won't have to risk scaring your kids with this advert!" Grin

I pirate my DVDs in order that I don't have to watch this shite. Wink

lol kateshrub Why is it that those who legitimately buy dvd's get made to feel like criminals? Geez, it would be less hassle to just illegally download! You spend a fortune on the film, are forced to sit through loads of crap and then are forced to look at more crap telling you not to pirate. YOU JUST BLOODY BOUGHT IT FFS!

Yes it's definitely less hassle to illegally download. Normal DVD players are programmed not to let you skip the 10 minutes of trailers and burn-in-hell warnings.

With illegally downloaded movies there are no such issues.

I know that with downloadable music they've removed some of the copy protection because it was absurd that by paying you got an inferior product compared to stealing it, but I don't think that's happened with movies yet - the paying customer is milked like a cow.

Please.don't encourage illegal downloading, my.husband is an independent film maker and he earns little enough as it is!

I buy legal DVDs and having to sit through the anti-piracy ads without the option to skip them makes me want to buy pirated ones. It's stupid to annoy the paying customer like that and yes, the ad is often not suited to young children.

Got to agree with KateShrub that I'm paying extra to get an inferior product, the industry needs to fix that.

I have not gotten the point of those ads being on legally purchased disks. Preaching to the choir a bit, yeah?

i watch everything (tv shows, films) online. dvd's are ridiculously expensive and even when they're in the sales, they're more than i'm really willing to spend when i know i can watch it all for free on the internet. i'll buy dvd's if i'm given vouchers or something, or if it's a hard-to-find film, but generally watching it online is more convenient and saves me money. plus, you can't scratch the online versions!

I don't think we can jump from saying the advert was inappropriate, to saying it's ok to buy pirate dvds/illegally download films.
I am swayed by the whole "you wouldn't steal froma shop" etc advert, I never would steal so it's odd if I've no problem doing it online. I do watch films on my pc - but as part of my lovefilm subscription.
It's one of those issues where if a few people do it it makes no difference, but if everyone did it there would be no film industry.

"You wouldn't download a car!"

I would, if I had the bandwidth.

Bangwhizz, your neighbours might have more money than you, better get round there with a sack and a chisel.

I haven't seen the ad, my kids DVDs are older, but sitting through non fastforwardable ads and trailers make me Angry

Also sympathy he found it scary, DD1 used to get freaked by Eastenders trailers, always people arguing. Things adults would blank out and not really see can get to small children. I do wish people would think where they put them.

So it's okay to steal from people you assume have more money than you?

It's nuts, I don't watch a lot of DVDs but this still drives me mad. It doesn't make it ok to pirate of course, but surely they have to realise that they're punishing those who actually buy the thing and that pirates enjoy a superior product where they can double click and be watching the film straight away.

ah but you see if I am not going to buy the dvd anyway the it makes me richer without making them 'poorer' a win-no lose situation you might say

Must say VHS had its Drawbacks, but at least you could fast forward the ads and trailers!

I'm not condoning pirate DVDs, just saying that in many ways I'd rather that than buy legit DVDs from this particular company now as my ds was so scared by the totally inappropriate ad! (Not saying I would!)
