My dd is 4. She has had really watery dia past 5 mornings. Has only happened during night/first thing in morn 6-7am. She gets stomach pain and then explodes on toilet plus past two nights has vomited during this episode too.

We have already had norovirus last month and this is completely different in character. Norovirus 24-48hrs of puking onstantly and feeling dreadful. This only happens when she has been asleep. During day her only symptom is looking pale and no appetite.

We live rurally and water from natural supply which I know has a higher than average e coli. Spoke to gp who asked about water supply and i have been given containers for stool samples to hand in on Monday.

Aibu to feel nervous about waiting over weekend, no one has examined her i just spoke to gp on phone and she said pick up containers hand them in Monday. Dd is not really unwell. She is lively during day for sure but i can't help but feel really worried and have E coli and cryptosporidium going round my head. I was hospitalised for 2 weeks in my 20's with the later

Go with your instincts, take her to OOH

Is she still taking water? Has she deteriorated in a rapid way or such like? Is there an on call GP over the weekend

It's hard to not worry but it could be something else.

It could be a weird bug. My DS2 had a very high temp for 3 days ( but only bad from 4pm until 10.00am) last week. Then 6 days after recovery the same has occurred again - so there's weird bugs there.

Also could be constipation. The runny poo is coming from behind a blockage?

Speak to NHS Direct if you are getting really anxious.

Horrible worrying about them isn't it?

It's horrible not knowing and I can totally understand why you are worrying. All you can do is monitor her and seek advice if she develops any more symptoms. The dr isn't overly concerned so I think that should reassure you.

Make sure she is getting enough fluids and maybe stick to bland food if you can (chicken, pasta, toast) to see if that makes a difference.

Hopefully the test results will be back quickly and you'll know what's causing it.
There are lots of nasty bugs going around and they all have slightly different symptoms. Hope your dd is back to her usual self soon.

Thanks guys for replies Thanks

She has no high temp and not listless.

I think my concerns are mostly - why is it only happening at night after sleeping/lying down.
How hydrated is she when she is pooing around 500-750mls of yellow liquid each night/morning.
Definitely not constipated.
And finally that no one has seen her. Examined her tum.

Im probably worrying for nothing but i just feel its all quite strange.

Hi, I think you are right to be concerned about the water source.

My advice would be to keep her off mains water for now, ring NHS direct for some proper medical advice (or take her to out of hours/a+e if needed) and then on Monday make sure you submit the stool sample and ring your local environmental health team who will come out and test her water.

E.coli can be very serious so you're right to be worried.

give her diarrlite or salt & sugar mixed up with bottled water to keep her mineral levels up. if the poo is white/cream in colour then seek medical advice immediately.Use wet wipes or warm soapy water to clean her after each toilet visit. Use disposable gloves & disinfect bathroom v regularly as you don't want it spreading if its e-coli.

Could it be something she is eating or drinking before bedtime. That would account for waking up with runny poo and tummy ache. Vitimins, cows milk, etc....could be allergy.

I think you are right to be concerned but try not to worry - keep an eye on her, keep her comfy and hydrated and take her to be seen if she gets any worse.

I also think it could be diet related - I have children who are dairy and gluten intolerant and we discovered this in DD2 when she was having very bad diarrhoea the day AFTER nursery where she was having 2 cups of milk in the afternoon.

also remember that after a stomach bug, the body can be temporarily unable to digest dairy due to the good enzymes having been got rid of, so it could be that

if it was just the water, surely you would all be ill - but theres no harm in giving boiled water only if you really are worried it is that

I understand that some children can develop a temporary lactose intolerance after getting a stomach bug - you say you all had Norovirus last month?

Does she have milk just before going to bed?

I would certainly only be using bottled or at least boiled water until you get to the bottom (sorry) of this-but I wouldn't be worried about her not being examined- unless there is something you're specifically worried about?

She has mild lactose intolerance so doesn't drink cows milk. It has been a battle to get squash/water in to her so defo not something she is eating/allergic to.
Water wise, we all drink the same water but she is the youngest so probably most suseptible.
Hardly eaten today. More watery stools about an hour ago and to make matters worse she is hysterical when i try to stick some film in the pan to catch a sample. Cried her heart out. Poor baby. Sad

If she's hardly eating or drinking then take ger to be checked out. Better to be overly cautious. No one will mind you doing so. Hope she is better soon.

Go with her body....dont give her food unless she is really hungry. Are you sure that she is not eating something that might poss contain cows milk in some form or another or she might just have a simple tummy bug.

Has she had anything except squash over the last few days?
