AIBU?

To think this is a bit unfair of the school

My DD had an injury to her foot that has resulted (after some time actually) with the toe nail detaching as a healthy nail grows through. The problem is tht the old nail hasn't quite come off yet. When we went swimming the other day it softened up and was flapping around and really hurting DD. I took her to see the nurse but she wouldnt allow nurse to remove it and nurse in two minds so the decision to wait for it to come off. She is going to have swimming lessons with the school this term and she loves it but refuses to get her foot wet (some interesting bath times!) as it was so painful before.

Went to see her teacher fully expecting to be told to take DD into school after swimming but was told tht no, i would have to take her in at the normal time and she will have to sit in the other class (same year group).

Poor DD, so not only will she miss out on swimming but will have to go and sit in other class and feel like a bit of an interluder. or alternatively find the novelty quite enjoyable as she didn't seem to mind but I amd just dissappointed that i wont be albe to have some time with her on that morning

I accept that this is what needs to happen but just feel a bit :( about it.

YABU.

The school has a duty to ensure that your dd is receiving some kind of education during school hours. They are doing the right thing.

Whydobabiescry · 27/02/2013 23:18

Yep sorry but YABU she will ave to go to school just as any other child who doesn't want to go on school trip etc

seeker · 27/02/2013 23:19

Put a plaster on the toe to hold the nail down. Verruca sock. Swimming. Sorted.

PedlarsSpanner · 27/02/2013 23:20

well yes of course she will have to go to school at normal time, they will set her alternative work

no lie-ins for you, you lazy mare! *

*joke

Iaintdunnuffink · 27/02/2013 23:20

Sorry, yabu.

Bluelightsandsirens · 27/02/2013 23:21

Sorry but yabu your DD needs to go to school as normal and if she can't join in normal scheduled activities the school will find something else for her to do.

You could yank it off whilst she sleeps though.

kinkyfuckery · 27/02/2013 23:22

You think she should just be able to bunk off because she won't go swimming with the rest of her class??

mercibucket · 27/02/2013 23:27

have you ever heard of this happening before? where would you get a daft idea like that from? sad for your dd, but thats life. hooe her nail is better soon, sounds grim

countrykitten · 27/02/2013 23:29

The school are right. Your assumption was wrong. Sorted.

ilovesooty · 27/02/2013 23:31

I'm astonished that you even imagined this would be a possibility. Of course she has to attend at the normal time.

Lucyellensmum95 · 27/02/2013 23:34

ah yeah, i know im really being UR but just :( really

Pedlars how very dare you suggest such a thing - the very idea Grin

ooh seeker thats a good idea, but would the verruca sock work without the plaster do you think (having never seen a verruca sock before) as DD adamantly refuses the plaster. Or anything else for that matter (wuss)#

Bluelights - am sorely tempted (as i know that the bloody thing is gong to get ripped off at some point and be effing painful)

Lucyellensmum95 · 27/02/2013 23:35

honestly ilovesooty, i didn't even consider that they would have to do that - just never entered my head

Assuming swimming is at the beginning of the day (hence possibly going in late), if your dd is not there at the beginning of the day she will be marked absent for that morning. Of course she should be at school during swimming. Maybe seeing her friends having fun might persuade her to let the nurse take the nail off after all?

northcountrygirl · 27/02/2013 23:41

Yanbu to be disappointed. I love snow days for the same reason Grin

Lucyellensmum95 · 27/02/2013 23:43

Ah, thats it annh it is because the children dont go to school before swimming, parents have to drop at swimming pool. I usually stay to help escort the kids back to school. So maybe that is why i thought it would be ok.

I am being daft!

Maybe it will persuade her to be brave stop being a stubborn wuss about the nail

Remotecontrolduck · 28/02/2013 01:15

Well YABU kind of because i'm not sure they can let her go in late every week but YANBU, I get what you mean as sitting in another class probably won't be that fun for her.

A few slightly harsh responses though, ouch!

seeker · 28/02/2013 06:02

How does she manage with shoes?

Would you feel the same if swimming was middle day? Would you want to collect her and return her? Grin

fluffyraggies · 28/02/2013 07:19

bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee @ flapping hanging nails!

YANBU for fancying a change in routine and a gentler start on some mornings. But it was never going to happen like that OP :)

noisytoys · 28/02/2013 08:18

YABU. DD had to miss a few weeks swimming when she was recovering from scarlet fever. She went into another class and did work on there

Lucyellensmum95 · 28/02/2013 08:30

seeker she is fine with shoes (just) its not a problem when the nail is dry (or just wet from bath but i cant persuade her of that!) but in the pool it goes soft and flaps around.

Could you not trim the nail down to the bit that is still attached? I has this kicked a nail and it lifted most of my little toe nail off it was agony!! I trimmed it down as much as I could so it was not all flappy

Groovee · 28/02/2013 08:34

I had to miss swimming for a while at school and had to go into the other class each Monday afternoon. I hated the teacher but there was no other choice.

landofsoapandglory · 28/02/2013 08:46

YABU

DS2 fractured, dislocated and tore the ligaments in his shoulder playing rugby at school last Thursday. He will need surgery to fix it, and won't be doing PE again before he leaves school after taking his GCSEs in the Summer. His PE lessons are Thursday and Friday afternoons, I've told him to take revision in to work in the library - it never entered my head that he should come home early!
