My name is NOT Julie...

So I am reasonably friendly with a mum at the school. Our DC are both 6 and we have known each other for 16 or so months. Our kids play together in the holidays, do a club together and have tea etc, so a fair amount of contact.

I'm called Julia. She has always, ALWAYS called me Julie. I have corrected her twice over the months. Nicely but emphatically. The first time she said it I smiled and said ' It's Julia or Jules, either of those is fine, ' and the second time I just said ' Eeek! I don't like Julie.. it's julia! ' again with a smile. I have also corrected her son in front of her when he has said it.

She is the sort who use your name A LOT. And still she says Julie.

So.. would this irritate you? Annoy you? Not bother you?

It annoys the FUCK out of me grin

My name is Tracey. I go to college once a week. I am in the second year. My DD is in the first year. There is one other second year. He always calls me Stacey. Every time he calls me it, my DD nearly wets herself laughing!

Everyone else calls me Tracey (apart from DD), they use my name a lot. Why can he not get it?

YANBU!!

Totally annoying! !!

My work colleagues has a similar problem with some of our parents (nursery) she is Amanda and is always introduced at that, she has been called several times now Mandy. Makes her cross, she's to polite to say anything though!!

I have this with my sister in law. She has pretty much always called me by the wrong shortening of my name (she uses another, similar, accepted shortening). She has been told many times, once quite angrily during a row about something else. Her dc now use it too sigh. I just let her get on with it these days.

I'm Susan and much of my family and acquaintances call me sue. I hate it. My name is Susan! So yanbu to insist on being called your name!

However it does get wearing and tbh I've stopped telling my dad. He's never going to remember!!

Stop responding to it. Just pretend you can't hear her. Yeah, it's passive aggressive and rude, but I give it an hour before she gets it right and never does it again.

I have an Irish name, and in the 25 years I have lived in the UK not one person has ever managed to say my name right. It took my SIL 13 years to actually spell it right (and that was after a lot of reminders). I've given up. If it really bothers you just correct her every single time she says your name, and do it with an air of exasperation. If I were you though I'd let it go. Life's too short.

My neighbour and I have very similar names...there's only one letter difference at the end.

She calls me by her name and I call her by mine! grin

My name is julie, get called julia sometime's or julieanne but does not bother me . wink

I had this at work. My name is Juliette but my manager insisted on calling me Julie even when I said it was either Juliette or Jules but she knew better. Trouble was all the other staff called me Julie too because of her, to the point that when I took over her job because she was fired for being an incompetent fool the other staff were shocked to find that my name was not julie.

I can't stand any attempts to alter my name. I also however have a hard time remembering names and often get names mixed up. Maybe she struggles? I'd go on the charm offensive and start using comedy (if you want to keep her as a friend) to repeatedly correct her until she learns.

I have a double barrel name that people shorten when its not supposed to be shortened.

And DD2 is called Sophia. But everyone, HV, MWs, even my mother (at first) call her Sophie. angry

SpicyPear Fri 22-Feb-13 18:32:17

I can see it's annoying but if you get a wrong name stuck it can be very hard to shake it!

kim147 Fri 22-Feb-13 18:32:55

At least you know the first names. I only know the surnames when I do supply at a school I've been at for ages - it's hard to learn peoples first names when they don't tell you.

It's in Susie's class - who's Susie confused

katieelh Fri 22-Feb-13 18:33:40

This is so weird, there was a childminder at my sons preschool who used to call me Julie but my name isn't even similar, it's Katie. The first few times she said it I was confused, I thought maybe I had misheard then I told her actually its not Julie it's Katie, 'oh' she said 'sorry' but do you know what, the next time I saw her, she called me Julie again! I was so uncomfortable I answered to it and even now years later when I see her out walking the dog, she sometimes shouts over 'hi Julie' bless my children they are soooo confused.

BunnyLebowski, that is a particular favourite YBF clip in our house and that was my first thought too.

HappyHippyChick Fri 22-Feb-13 18:35:55

I'm a Julia as well my dh nan has called me Julie for nearly 20 years and despite being corrected (not by me!) many times she still gets it wrong. Ditto my best friends mum who I've known for over 30 years!

Ridiculously that doesn't bother me, but the example in the op would get right on my tits!

LadyFlumpalot Fri 22-Feb-13 18:36:31

My old next door neighbour used to call me Penny. All the time. It's near-ish my name (Jenny). I gave up in the end and would even sign her Xmas card with "Penny"

everlong Fri 22-Feb-13 18:36:54

My name has a S in it and people pronounce it Z. I've explained it but people don't listen.

Sort of get used to it after a bit.

I agree though Julia is nicer than Julie.

AyeOopMoose Fri 22-Feb-13 18:37:23

My DM's neighbour calls her a name that isn't remotely like her actual name.

She has sent Christmas cards with her actual name in and the neighbour's husband calls my DM the correct name (and has done so in a conversation in front of his wife where she has called DM the other name).

We all find it funny now. It's gone too far for my DM to keep correcting her neighbour-who is a really lovely women.

HappyHippyChick Fri 22-Feb-13 18:37:26

Have you ever had a situation where you're aware you get someone's name wrong and try so conciously to get the right name you say the wrong one instead - every time! That's me that is!

Skimty Fri 22-Feb-13 18:38:03

Funny, Wanna, my DD is called Sophie and everyone calls her Sophia. Even the HV told ME that it was definitely Sophia because that's what she had written on her sheet!

ApplyYourself Fri 22-Feb-13 18:38:14

Glad i'm not the only one it would annoy.

I can't really correct her again, although I always correct her son when he is in my house in the vain hope it might trickle back to her.

She says my name during every conversation we have. i have never said hers. Some people just do this dont they?

Happiestinwellybobs Fri 22-Feb-13 18:39:56

I had this with one woman at my

grin Skimty.

I spelled it out to the HV and she still wrote sophie.

Isabeller Fri 22-Feb-13 18:41:17

Start calling her Julie (repeatedly)? grin
