AIBU?

To think that spectacles without lenses are utterly ridiculous. Or am I just too old and fuddy duddy to recognize a bit of fun?

We live opposite a university (which in Malaysia is not the same as the UK). In our flats there are a number of students.
This morning, four got in wearing those glasses that are just the frames, no lenses at all.
AIBU to think they look stupid?

Yanbu.

My daughter was wearing a pair of bright yellow plastic frames not only without lenses but with daft stripy bits of plastic across her eyes the other day.

I wasn't sure I understood why,still don't.

My DD wears the cinema 3D ones without lenses in.
(She first wore them in a school play , she liked the 'distinguished' look they gave her.

(She looks a bit Gok Wan in them but I haven't shared that) Grin

Yanbu as a glasses wearer I find it baffling.

Good. I did wonder about them - also whether they were common outside of Malaysia.
DD was telling me, at great volume as she does, about the child in her class who has a pair of Gucci ones without lenses.
I think she is a bit Envy since she needs to wear proper bins.

I find it odd, too. Uni DD and her friends often had nights out as 'geeks' and I was completely baffled. I loathed having to wear glasses - got contacts at 16 and finally laser surgery in my 30s. The idea of dressing up to look deliberately unattractive when hunting for lads passed me by...I wouldn't have been seen dead in my specs if I could have avoided it at that age!

Geeky Smile my DD looks anything but geeky. Messy, mucky and disheveled but certainly not geeky.

Without anything in at all is weird. The glasses that came with my naughty secretary outfit have plain glass in them. Much classier and less weird.

WHAT? naughty secretary outfit. I live in a different time space continuum to most people. Surely everyone knows it's a nurse who is naughty?

Crikey it's just youth fashion... we are not supposed to get it or agree with it! Wink

Secretaries are naughtier than nurses. Tight pencil skirts beat starchy blue dresses, even if there is the promise of rubber gloves later on.

No, you are wrong. Black stockings are what all nurses wear. True fact that. Or at least true to my DHs juvenile friends.
Back to the glasses. I s'pose the lenses won't need changing every six months.

And, you are right comedy central. I just don't get youth fashion. I am sure I never looked as daft...

I've never heard of/seen teens wearing glasses without lenses, I must be rather unobservant!

Tiggs, my mind is boggling at the thought of you in a naughty secretary's outfit Grin

They have been banned at a local primary school as so many children were choosing to wear them?

I work in an opticians and we do have people who have bought frames and had plano lenses (no rx in the lens) to wear as fashion items. These are usually high end, such as Gucci, Prada etc.

Dd says posey middle class children generally.

YouTheCat · 20/02/2013 09:33

Not that I have anything against the middle classes but you just don't tend to find the glasses without lenses on kids who aren't.
