Walking last few yards into school. ds2 walking in front of me, ds1 at my side.

Mother just enterting school gates flicks her fag butt up and to her side, missing ds2's face by about 3 inches.

Inside my head I was picking it up and helpfully extinguishing it by ramming it up her nose.

In reality neither ds had noticed, and there was nothing to be gained from a confrontation, so I just continued with school drop-off.

Why flick it up into the air? If she really must litter outside the school gate with her fag butts, why not drop it away from the faces of small children, and even go to the trouble of putting it out too.

Smokers and their fag ends send me apoplectic with rage. People who wouldn't dream of chucking a drinks can on the ground, scattering their stinking, foul smelling, fire starting dregs everywhere. In the sand on beaches, on the street, in the park, you name it. YANBU.

Pisses me right off and I'm a smoker.

On the rare occasions I do smoke outside, my fags get put out responsibly and put in a bin (if there is no bin I put the butt back in the pack until I find one).

Pretty much exactly that happened to me and my DS when he was under 2 (he's in his 30s now...bear a grudge? moi?). It was a young bloke what did it. Without thinking I screamed out 'Wtf do you think you're doing???' (we didn't say wtf in those days: come to think of it we didn't say what the fuck either, but you get my drift).

Well the nice thing is that the guy was absolutely mortified, couldn't apologise enough, was near to tears...so I think he learned his lesson, and probably wouldn't have done it again!

So yes you should have said something!! Glad no one was hurt!

We have a smoker on the top floor of our house. (flats)
He drops his cigarettes out the window all over the drive, it's foul. Once we were outside and one whistled past ds's head.

He used to drop them out the back onto our patio as well but since I looked up and stared at him, he stopped. We're none of us allowed to smoke here anyway - it's against the contract - and the other day he had the nerve to say to me, you think I smoke in the flat, I never smoke i nthe flat' and I stood there smiling and saying 'of course not' when he and I know full well I've seen him countless times.

oh and it never used to happen, but recently there's a littl clique of chavs peple who smoke outside the school gate, meaning no one can stand near them...I think they think their smoke isn't affecting anyone else but it is.

Only one of them is actually a mother - the others just turn up with her every bloody day.

Being a smoker I do the same as manicbmc and find it disgusting myself when people just throw their cigarette buts anywhere.

YANBU. I had someone chuck a fag but out of the passenger window of a car once and it landed straight in the pram. Luckily I noticed quickly (DS1 was about 8 weeks), but it still left a burn mark on his blanket before I could get it off.

I hate it when I see parents smoking at the school gates. It sends a bad message to the children, stinks and gives the impression they just don't give a shit.

Under some circumstances I would have said something, but having shared schools with this woman for 4 years I can safely say that even there meekest squeak of disapproval would have brought about an awful lot of swearing (on top of the swearing she and her mates were already enjoying), and in front of my dc, at the start of the school day I really didn't think it was a good idea.

No you didn't swear TWinklylittleStar and that I appreciate. But your post did not actually address the points in the OPs post, The main issue there was that this mindless person had flicked a lit cigarette but in the air that had nearly hit her DD in the face.

Your post was an attack on smokers in general.....
