An item still has seven days left to run?? I just don't get it at all. Watching a premium brand pushchair at the moment and the bidding is already heading for what you would pay new. Or is there shill bidding going on?

Sorry first world problem but its got me very irritated.

and you can use tactics at real auctions too, you can tell the newbies they sit at front frantically waving number the minute auctioneer suggests price while if they kept quiet the auctioneer would drop starting price and they may have got same item for half the price

the dealers often chat before hand to make sure they are not bidding each other up so they agree tactics they stand at back and watch the room

Nothing wrong with using tactics, its just not on to try to force everyone to use your tactic if they feel it doesn't work for them.

I am an early bidder and happy with it. If there is competition for the item then it will make minimal difference to the final price

I often buy a particular specialist vintage item (I try to buy them all), if I do nothing and go in at the last minute I will win (as I put in a high bid) but the price get pushed up,

But if I put in a medium bid as soon as an item is listed, lots of people will then not bother following the item as it is already high, I tend to get the item for about third to half cheaper than if it becomes a full on bidding war.
