I have never ordered from next before but wanted a pair of jeans and decided to put the order through on there.

I pressed checkout and got to the part where it says something like " Open an account and get free delivery if you select to receive a directory £3.75" will be billed at a later date.
I dont want to open an account since Im trying to keep my good credit and so I selected to pay for delivery thinking this would make it a simple pay by card affair.

So I click submit the next page says "sorry we have been unable to open an account for you at this time".
WTF I dont WANT an account?

So they seem to have run a credit check anyway? I had a google and from what I have read they do seem to run a credit check if you register on the site. This is NOT clear on the website at ALL. I am going to be really upset if this shows up on my credit history we are in the middle of applying for a mortgage and I dont really want credit searches appearing/

All I wanted was a £28 pair of jeans!

AIBU or are next underhanded bastards?

Almost the exact same thing happened to my sister last year. It was resolved IIRC, but it was annoying. She was batting emails back and forth with them for a while. I don't know why they have to do this. You can buy directly from classic catalogue companies like Very and Littlewoods without having to open an account or be credit searched for one, so I'm not sure why Next have to be so awkward about it.

Yeah - I hate most Next clothes anyway but did see a pair of jeans I wanted a while back and went elsewhere because of this very reason.

If you have a friend with the Next Directory they can order for you.

Ten weeks! Wow. My orders get from the warehouse in Leeds to me in Northern Canada in less than a week! I've converted lots of my Canadian friends as they offer free shipping and pay any import taxes.

Same thing happened to me but with a different retailer. I was livid when the search showed up on my credit files. I contacted the company and asked to be put through to the dept responsible for providing the info to the credit ref agencies and explained my situation and that I had only wanted a one time cash transaction, not a bloody account! They removed the search history from my account within days!

Next are awful for online shopping. They also send out the catalog and charge for it every time. There's also some annual fee they attach.

They are shit.

I am still waiting on an order placed 23/12/12. Half of it arrived 2 weeks ago which was about a week after the confirmed delivery date that I'd waited in for Angry

In my area they insist on using Hermes despite the delivery person being shit, delivering late, lying about attempting delivery and all the clothes turning up stinking because the driver smokes in the car. :(

If you haven't got a store nearby then you also pay for returns. So 3.99 delivery plus 3.99 returns.

8 quid to try on a pair of 30 quid trousers that look rubbish

Stick to Asos, get the annual pass thing for a tenner and you get next day delivery and free returns for a year!

Ironically, their international site guarantees shipping to the other side if the world within five days - for free!

And you don't have to open an account. You just pay with your debit card in the ordinary way.

Oh dear overseas they are great no catalogue stuff orders arrive within 3 days. However a costume my dd wanted was only on next uk so ordered and sent to M address - i know I will pay for it later but the cc that was linked to the account expired ages ago but they still let me order. I send teh directory back as and when it arrives never paid for one - parents just hand it back to the Hermes chap .

I had this with Next, ordered some rugs from them a few years ago and had no idea they had opened an account until they started chasing me for some £1 fee fora catalogue or some bollocks I hadn't requested. Bearing in mind I had paid immediately on my credit card.

I phoned them up and told them in no uncertain terms to fuck off and then fuck off some more. £1 charge was waived, account closed.

Someone then tried to open a fraudulent account in my DH's name for our old address a few months ago - and they let them. So much for their credit checks. Angry

La Redoute used to be the same, don't know if they still are?

I don't shop using Next Online anymore. Avoid them. In short this is what happened:

Paid using card.
Items arrived.
Returned items in-store. Refunded to card, verified on bank statement and on Next receipt.

Months later, Next send me a later demanding that I pay for those items.
I explain I did pay and they did refund me.
Their customer service person on the phone literally says: 'You shouldn't lie and keep clothes you haven't paid for' Shock
I complain in writing, providing email confirmation of order, payment, return, refund.
They send another letter demanding payment or they'll take me to court Hmm
I write back threatening them with the financial ombudsman
They write and apologise Hmm

HATE this company.

I will never shop with next online again either. Far too long to go into on here, but I can't believe a company can make it so hard to spend money with them.

However... A lot of companies run credit checks when shopping on their sites, even if you aren't opening an account. Debenhams is one (and that is when paying with debit card). It's buried in their t+c's somewhere.

I hate next too. Closed my account with them after continuous hassles. Total shite. Won't buy anything in store anymore either.

What a nightmare, u had the same, was given a 10 pounds off voucher and only.wanted a pair of shoes, then they credit checked me, opened an account and then would not accept the voucher. I got very mad at them and they closed the account in the end. Didn't realise it could still be on file though...

HermioneE · 27/01/2013 12:35

Agreed. When I last shopped online with them, it was set up where there were two buttons to click, both relating to opening an account.

I would have had to spot that they were square not radio buttons, and therefore clicking neither button was my third option, in order to avoid the account.

I didn't but realised afterwards, rang up and complained and they immediately cancelled it and took a one off payment instead. Credit check had obv still happened though.

In my opinion they were deliberately trying to mislead, don't know if it's still the same as I haven't shopped online from them since!!

I have cancelled my account with Next... Bit silly really but been with them for years and never offered a VIP slot on sale then I got one! I was we'll chuffed... Anyway I then find out they have given a shitty waste of time slot on day 2 of sale - found via friends that they had all had slots the day before yet didn't spend as much as me, etc...
Called them and it was because I had cancelled directorys being delivered after being charged for 2 I never received. They felt they were bring stolen as their driver continually leaves item in view / out in the rain.

So despite a good credit with them, spending a lot of money with I was told tough them are the rolls - I cancelled my account - shit customer service, inequitable offer system and ad hoc delivery...

Oh and they tried to tell me I owed them 34p even though I had had a nil statement for months but they can't take payments under a £1... They waived it in the end

Report
dayshiftdoris · 27/01/2013 12:38

And found out since other friend had day 1 sale slots with no directorys - just information that is... By then I was very bored of it all x

I really like Next; shoes and skirts mostly. I buy the stuff on my account, have it delivered to the nearest next store and pick it up. Returns are easy.

each to their own... some of the shops other posters rave about here I wouldn't set foot in and vice versa.

I had a similar issue with them but if you ring them you can set up a cash account and just pay with a debit card without all the guff about accounts and directories.

I don't use them any more but still get a catalogue.
I ordered a lamp for my elderly mum and she got the same thing, I had to phone and cancel her account.
You can't do a one off order with them, they're shit.
