To think the ice-cream van is a bit premature...

...especially given that there's still snow on the ground?

At uni halls (not near any shops) the ice cream van came round at ten or eleven every night. Now I don't know if he sold drugs, but he did a roaring trade anyway in fags and chocolate for students wanting late-night sugar fixes. No matter how hard you tried to resist, Greensleeves would start playing and you'd be lured out the front door..

There was an icecream van parked outside school on Monday afternoon and despite the snow and ice still hanging around it was doing a roaring trade.

DD2 was most put out that I didn't have any money on me

I was once in Oklahoma, tornado warnings out and everyone tuned in to local TV/radio waiting for the official instruction to head to the storm cellars with provisions (the tornado eventually hit the next small town over), when an ice cream van drove down the road outside with its chimes going. I thought that was pretty hardcore.

Not a bad thing though Fakebook, smile DP was 6 months or so when this happened but his Mam remembers it well, they'd moved from Easter House Estate to the Ruchazie.

Cortana Sun 27-Jan-13 10:55:37

We're in Scotland, Mr Whippy round every night with his ice creams, milk, bread, dodgy fags, knock off booze and I also suspect drugs given his clientele.

Fakebook Sun 27-Jan-13 10:49:58

I must live in a ball of cotton wool then.

ResolutelyCheeky Sun 27-Jan-13 10:16:57

Did you get off with one last night op and he was a little disappointing? grin

Flobbadobs Sun 27-Jan-13 10:09:22

Man. Ice cream man, not ma...

Flobbadobs Sun 27-Jan-13 10:09:01

Our ice cream ma had Christmas Day off and that's it. He's an optimist if nothing else...

MrsKeithRichards Sun 27-Jan-13 09:59:35

Fakebook it's hardly a new phenomenon, nor will it be news to the police.

blondefriend Sun 27-Jan-13 09:52:59

Even ice cream men need to make a wage in the winter. I'm quite happy to buy them in the winter, I'll just eat them on my sofa by the open fire. smile

cozietoesie Sun 27-Jan-13 09:52:09

The police know all about them, Fakebook. I guess they'd rather keep an eye on them out in the open. (They're pretty obvious.)

Celticlassie Sun 27-Jan-13 09:32:50

I've seen one (fairly) near us, out at about 10 on a Saturday night.

[Hmm]

Fakebook Sun 27-Jan-13 09:32:13

Those of you with druggy ice cream vans: why haven't you reported them to the police?

EduCated Sun 27-Jan-13 09:27:02

We used to have an ice cream can that sold stuff. He was always very surprised if you actually asked for an ice cream.

MrsKeithRichards Sun 27-Jan-13 09:14:56

We get 3 rounds in the summer holidays, 3pm 6pm then again about 9/10pm. I don't think there's much ice cream on board for the late run.

acceptableinthe80s Sun 27-Jan-13 09:03:23

Weirdly our ice cream van only comes round in winter, never in the summer confused

And he always comes around 4.30/5pm, I feel like telling him that perhaps he would get more business if he didn't come round right before dinner time!

andtheycalleditbunnylove Sun 27-Jan-13 08:29:52

the ice cream van near here comes round in the dark, in the rain, after 7pm - how many children are going to be queuing up? none. just the people wanting the drugs.

i've tried different methods to check my theory. i mentioned it to gang-linked pupils saying "i think..." and got the response "you don't think, miss, you know!" and i went to buy an ice-cream - guess what? he didn't have any. he managed to find a sad-looking ice lolly. on that occasion, the man in front of me had 'the usual' dropped in a tub but with no ice cream on top...because there wasn't any....

so glad its widely known!

BratinghamPalace Sun 27-Jan-13 03:00:08

My friends live in S London and the ice cream van comes around with splif, Or so they claim!

giraffesCantEatNHSPotatoes Sun 27-Jan-13 02:52:02

We have one every day! Twice an evening every day and afternoon on holidays and weekends!

munchkinmaster Sun 27-Jan-13 01:46:44

You do know ice cream vans often sell drugs? Probably all clamped down on these days. Google the ice cream wars - cant imagine they were having a turf war over where they sold the mr whippy ......

bluecarrot Sat 26-Jan-13 23:11:26

Ours is like a late night newsagents. But with dodgy imported cigarettes and alcohol.

KatyTheCleaningLady Sat 26-Jan-13 23:09:56

I heard ours yesterday or the day before. Still snow on the ground!

But, if people are buying, I guess he's right to be out there.

Where I grew up the ice cream van came round every day of the week regardless of weather, twice on Sundays and had Christmas Day and Boxing day off. smile He was dependable!

bexxytrexxie Sat 26-Jan-13 23:03:54

On calendar local news earlier the ice cream van was sitting at the bottom of the hill in roundhay park that people were skiing down
