To have a nice civilized conversation on mum's net. Free from swearing and all other kinds of unpleasantness. Where the topics of conversation are such delightful things as the Queen, tea, cakes and gardening, with perhaps a bit of singing thrown in for good measure. So Ill kick it off shall I, what is everyones favourite cake, mine is a Victoria Sponge

Perhaps cheesecake is a large biscuit. It does not have sponge, it has a biscuit crumb base. If it had a pastry base, then is it a tart?

YABU any discussion topic can have disagreements between posters opinions and thus could kick off.

"delightful topics such as the Queen"

<Thinks about discussing Republican views>

Cakes of course are lovely.

Callmedoe

I was reading your OP, going "yes, of course it's possible" then you did this:

"So Ill kick it off shall I, what is everyones favourite cake, mine is a Victoria Sponge "

It is not a frigging Victoria Sponge
it is a Victoria Sandwich.

it is a creamed cake and not a sponge.

please MNHQ can you provide a klaxon emoticon for titles of threads where posters are going to call it a sponge? It is the only red flag I have . thank you

Spiced apple cake. It's like an apple crumble, cake-ified. Lovely warm with cream.

I'm about to make a honey cake, will see how that turns out. I may eat it while parked in a P&C space without my kids in the car...

you've ruined my saturday <<sobsob>>

sad

ScrambledSmegs Sat 26-Jan-13 14:27:53

Give up, nickel. Too many people call it a sponge, you'll give yourself an embolism.

Although I sympathise. I've been know to hyperventilate with angry, merely due to newsreaders mispronouncing 'controversy'.

nickelbabe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:32:25

everyone else on this thread managed to say Victoria Sandwich.

it's like those people who open a thread with "iabu to be upset at this?" and then link without warning to a youtube video of people being shot and mauled by dogs.

nickelbabe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:33:11

(it's the Americans that have done that. my dad used to go on and on and on about the correct pron of harrassment)

nickelbabe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:33:29

harassment
even

Callmedoe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:36:57

Nick, please accept my sincere apologies. I didn't mean to offend you and I certainly didn't intend to ruin your Saturday, please accept this song as a peace offering

The World is just a great big Victoria Sandwich

and sponge is the spice that make you cry
Oh, & the only way to get rid of this great big Victoria Sandwich
Is to plant love seeds until it dies, uh huh
Hey Mum's net! We got a great big job to do
Yeah, we need you
& everybody who loves truth
Don't you know we've got to clean up this place
& reach far high & oh yeah
Yes we do
We gotta be headstrong about rightin' the wrong
& make a Word Wide Web of happy souls, oh;

ScrambledSmegs Sat 26-Jan-13 14:37:44

My mum goes on about harassment too. Must be a generational thing.

Like my school friends who used to have hour long arguments about where the correct emphasis goes when saying Quantum Leap hmm

A cake klaxon does sound rather delicious...

I'm so with you nickelbabe. It's a Victoria Sandwich. Anything else is blasphemous.

Callmedoe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:51:42

Apologies Kate would you like me to write you a song too?

ScrambledSmegs Sat 26-Jan-13 14:56:19

Poor OP.

All she wanted was a nice cakey discussion, with brief forays into the arena of puddings.

Instead she's got Sponge-gate shock

And

ScrambledSmegs Sat 26-Jan-13 14:56:54

Stray 'and'. There is no and...

YorkshireDeb Sat 26-Jan-13 14:57:57

You do realise they'll be talking about us talking about cake on the wright stuff next week? And our cakey preferences will be out there for the world to see. X

Callmedoe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:58:47

Oh that Mathew right annoys me, hope he doesn't steal my song

Callmedoe Sat 26-Jan-13 14:59:16

Wright even, I was so annoyed I forgot how to spell

ScrambledSmegs Sat 26-Jan-13 15:00:11

Or my arena of puddings.

<muses on pudding arena>

Mmmmm....grin

nickelbabe Sat 26-Jan-13 15:03:55

Battenburg for the cake side of things, and barn owls. The former because I love marzipan. The latter because they remind me of Labyrinth, which is still was my favourite film as a child and now.
