So all his friends have died. He goes back to his rich life, nice grand wedding paid for by Grandad.

AIBU to think his socialist principles have been shattered sad Which you can't blame him for really.

Marius is a wet pillock and not a particularly likeable character frankly. Even Michael Ball didn't actually like the man as a character.

maybe not he did seem pretty gutted about his friends and maybe he and cosette kept up the cause but I think he was a champagne socialist grin

Veritate Sat 19-Jan-13 15:11:08

Going off at a tangent. SIL has seen the film and says the person playing Marius makes her think of Kermit. What do other people think?

There was not much else he could do. He was badly wounded, lost all his friends, realised that the people were not ready for revolution. He was also not as committed to the revolutionary cause as friends like Enjolras (sob!) and was a complete wet blanket in comparison.

Celticlassie Sat 19-Jan-13 15:32:39

Oh God, he's beautiful...

BUT, he pissed me off when they're all singing about the revolution and he's mooning about some girl... Where are your priorities, Marius?

Yy to Kermit - very throaty/ nasally singing voice. Or did she mean he looks like him!?

PurpleStorm Sat 19-Jan-13 15:36:21

Yes, it seemed a bit like being a revolutionary was just a passing fad for Marius.

Ruprekt Sat 19-Jan-13 15:37:52

Marius and Cosette saved a couple though.

Both wet.

Marius should have gone for the beautiful feisty Eponine.

(useless fact - Gavroche was Eponine's brother in the book)

elizaregina Sat 19-Jan-13 15:43:17

Didnt make me think of kermit confused but DEFINALTY Tim Henman, I wasnt keen on him at all.

TheCatInTheHairnet Sat 19-Jan-13 15:50:58

"But my friends, my friends. Don't ask me. What your sacrifice was foooorrr!"

It just took all of his friends getting blown up, to make him realise Enjolras' plan was a bit stupid.

CaptainVonTrapp Sat 19-Jan-13 15:52:47

So its just me that wants to give him one then?

Celticlassie Sat 19-Jan-13 16:24:26

I'd give him several. grin

mrsjay Sat 19-Jan-13 16:42:12

Marius should have gone for the beautiful feisty Eponine.

{nods} cosette is such a drip isn't she grin

fruitstick Sat 19-Jan-13 16:48:51

Isn't that the point though. They were all just students who didn't really know what they were doing.

Didn't have any real experience of the life of the poor.

Typical!

Cosette is a complete non-character. Doesn't actually do anything.

Borntobeamum Sat 19-Jan-13 16:52:57

I thought he was the weakest character.

mrsjay Sat 19-Jan-13 16:54:46

Isn't that the point though. They were all just students who didn't really know what they were doing.

I think they were students and taking up a cause as some students do wink and the barracades thing in france only last a day and it was over

He chose the wrong girl, Eponine is so much much better than wet Cosette,

LesBOFerables Sat 19-Jan-13 17:05:14

I think he would go on to lead the life of a good bourgeois man, like Val Jean, doing charitable works and being a kind and responsible boss. As was said upthread, unfortunately the students timed it all wrong: the people were too frightened and oppressed to fight back at that point, and you can't lead a popular revolution if it isn't popular!

WipsGlitter Sat 19-Jan-13 17:10:24

I was lusting after him. I think Eddie Redmayne is gorgeous. I googled pictures of him when I came home. I am old enough to be his mother

kim147 Sat 19-Jan-13 17:13:27

It's actually based on the 1832 student revolution sad

Marius is Fernando Torres!!

(You have to find the right picture though grin )

VictorAndBarry Sat 19-Jan-13 17:17:16

I posted the exact same thoughts last Sunday, he was a bit of a short term socialist.

kim147 Sat 19-Jan-13 17:22:18

And I still don't get why Jean Valjean kept everything secret till the end.
