AIBU?

About going to the same place on holiday?

This is my first AIBU so don't be too harsh Grin

Last year me and DP went to Portugal for a week's holiday. I'd been to the same resort/town twice before (and stayed in the same hotel once) and it was DP's first time there. We had a lovely time and were both sad to leave.

Now it has come to booking this year's holiday and I think we should go back to the same place, but he disagrees.

My reasons are: it will be a boozy beach/ sunshine holiday somewhere in Europe wherever we go, so not like we will be exploring culture/sightseeing etc. It is probably the best place i've ever been to for this kind of holiday- lively strip but it's not full of massive groups of teenagers like Magaluf or Kavos etc. Everything is close by- beach, strip, shops etc not more than 5 mins away. Lovely, mainly English hotel with nice staff and a HUGE infinity pool. Portugal is (correct me if i'm wrong) hotter than Spain etc.

Basically I think we are lucky to have found such a perfect place for the type of holiday we want. I've been on lots of holidays that seem perfect but when you get there they are just a bit lacking in something. I work hard all year and this is my only break so I want the holiday to really live up to my expectations.

DP, however, feels that we should go somewhere new to 'experience it' and try new things. I've been to a lot of European beachy resorts so I don't feel the need to try new ones just for the sake of it, they are normally pretty similar, except this place in Portugal which really stands out.

Also, all we will be doing is sunbathing and drinking, so I don't see why we should risk ending up in a shithole just for the

Yabu. Life is short and holidays are few and far between. Be a little bit adventurous. I agree with your dp.

You have a point.

He has a point.

One of you is going to have to backdown from what you want and compromise.

I'd put the responsiblity entirely on him then, say he must research and book the holiday.

Then if it is awful at least you won't be responsible Grin.

Personally I agree with you, I have found one or two 'perfect' places over the years and love the familiarity of going back to the same place but DH loves new things ............. so I let him choose (and seethe quietly Grin).

YABU, unless you're 90. There are plenty of amazing places to see in Europe, no need to choose Magaluf a shithole

I've been to spain twice (to the same villa Blush although this was with dh's family so we had no choice. We are going elsewhere with them this year, and I'm a little sad we aren't going back to the same town.

We have been given some money by my aunt to go on holiday somewhere nice (I think she feels sorry for us going camping in the uk most years Grin.) DH and I have decided to go back to the same town in Spain (he went there as a boy), we know it, we know it's suitable, we know the best place to stay and who to hire a car from etc.

We can't afford a European holiday normally, and I'm not wasting the chance /money on something I don't know.

I agree with you and I agree with him

The best two holidays we've had since having DS have been in Zante. We all loved it there but we have this thing where we don't want to go to the same place twice so the last few years we've been elsewhere but... I don't like any of them as much as Zante. I like the other places we've been to but I just really liked Zante so we are going there this year OK DH? Good.

Since we've been going to the same place twice yearly for 13 years I am on your side OP Grin

Holidays are for relaxing and spending family time together. We do just that in a familiar place. DH has dramatic OCD tendencies and new places tend to bring out the worst in him.

We've been to the same place for the last 4 years. I love it. It's simply got everything. Have been to many beach destinations and would not go back to any place but this. Why risk it?

How about this year letting him search for somewhere "different" that will not be comparable to last year and say that you'd like to go back to Portugal to this resort the year after? My DH and I take it in turns as it were to choose the type of holiday we're going on - 'doing' holiday or 'doing nothing' holiday And if we can do both great. But going back 2 years in a row can be dangerous if it doesn't quite live up to the previous year. If you give it 2 years break it will be even better as you'll have a greater gap between experiences. We went to a fabulous place in Mexico and would have loved to have gone back but were worried it might not live up to the previous year so we did something completely different the next year and then went to a sister resort of the Mexico one and had a lovely time because of the time which had passed.

Menorca, Cala 'n Bosch. Fab resort, all low rise hotels, decent beaches, lovely marina, loads to do for little kids. Beautiful beaches a short drive away. Ciutadella (nearest town) has great shops and so cosmopolitan and child friendly in the Eve's. I get excited palpitations just thinking about it, tho we're off to oz this year.

justaweeone Oura View Beach Club, in Albufeira. It's lovely, the pool is to die for! And it has an indoor gym/pool/jacuzzi/steam room/sauna thing as well! You can't hear the strip at night from it because of the layout (on a hill) but you get the lift up to the 6th floor and it's literally a two minute walk. All the shops are down there too. I miss it so much!

Thanks for your replies so far everyone, I might have to show this thread to DP later if it goes noticeably in my favour!

HullyGully I went abroad three times last year, two to this same resort in Portugal (but with different people) and once to Majorca. Couldn't compare them- Majorca was alright but just a bit meh, nothing special about it at all.

Both your opinions are valid but maybe your husband just doesn't feel the same way anout it. Admit it doesn't overly appeal to me the way you have described.it. Also, i'd say spain can be hotter than portugal, especially the sea.

I think it depends if you have children. Before we had DS I would say YABU and that the world is big and worth exploring.

Now with DS at a young age I can see the benefit in staying at the same complex that we have been to before as it takes the guess work out of knowing how child friendly it is and what the food options are like. We have booked to go to the same place in Tenerife for the 3rd time in October - but that's also because I have a good deal for that place and the quality is very high for the cost

If you don't have DCs then I say let him choose and go somewhere different. If you can go out of school holidays then you can go to some exotic locations quite cheaply, time enough for endless Portugal once you have different priorities ( but then we did a holiday to Portugal with DS and didn't think much of it so maybe I'm biased !)

We have a place we also return to as it is just amazing. Even then, i like a change and new places. Spain has to be one of my.least favourite destinations.

CalamityJ that's the thing though, it will be the same type of holiday, as we can't afford anything outside of Europe (so not America, Mexico, Caribbean etc) and we (especially me Blush ) are far too lazy to go on any kind of active holiday, so it will be a chill round the pool doing nothing holiday, which DP is happy to do, so that's why I think it makes sense to go somewhere that we know is good, rather than spend two weeks somewhere else thinking 'Portugal was better'.

No children no, far too young for that Grin

We have a very limited budget (around £400-450 each) and I would like to go away for two weeks this year, which we can do in Portugal and shitty Spanish resorts

We will be going last week of June ish so prices should be lower as not into school holidays.

Hmmm bit of both I think. It is really nice to go back to somewhere you know so you don't have to use part of your holiday finding the supermarket and getting stressed and shouting at the DC in said supermarket. Which is why we are going back to the same part of Brittany but not the same resort just to shake things up a bit Grin

How about Italy, op? A beautiful country that can be very hot which has not been overly-affected by tourism.
