....its really starting to get on my wick!

I have a small crafty type business/hobby which I sell mostly on Facebook. Only started a few months ago and its going well.

In the last few days I have been asked on 4 separate occasions where I buy my supplies from.. Everyone who has asked has been direct competition.

AIBU to be a selfish bitch and not tell them?

Tbh, they aren't hard to find if you bang some key words into Ebay so why message me?

I wouldn't dream of asking where someone got their stock, I would just try and find them myself if I wanted them that bad! As it happens I'm not a copycat and use my own head!

If it's competition asking you then no I don't think yabu in not telling them.

Bearmonkeysmum · 12/01/2013 19:20

Yanbu & definitely not a selfish bitch!

How cheeky of them!

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 12/01/2013 19:20

Just say that a friend of the family gets it for you.

BonkeyMollocks · 12/01/2013 19:24

Ah feel bit better now!

I also think its very cheeky!

Use some bloody initiative!

I may start telling them that I get them handmade in my own home by squirrels!

Yes, let them do their own hard work...

Say.... I can tell you, but then I'd have to kill you
Twitch when you say it too

DamnBamboo · 12/01/2013 19:27

Just don't respond. YANBU to not tell them

Chottie · 12/01/2013 19:32

No, you are not. You are running a business not a charity.

namechanger11111 · 12/01/2013 19:47

I do something similar and i get people asking all the time.

I just say I'm sorry but it took me a long time to find my suppliers.

Most people are ok with that but i had one who kept going on with but why can't you tell me. I just ignored her from then on.

The thing is it has taken me a long time and a lot of research and money so there's no way I'm going to tell someone my suppliers and have them sell the same items as me in the same place.

Just say no they're rude to even ask.

RedToothbrush · 12/01/2013 19:47

Don't tell them. Just because they are friends doesn't give them the right to ask you things that could impact on your income. Its as simple as that.

HOWEVER if you are selling just on facebook, you probably are relying a great deal on goodwill and friendships, so I would say to seriously consider broadening your horizons so that a) you feel under less obligation b) people who you are selling too also don't feel like you potentially 'owe them' something in terms of their custom and/or contacts (FTR you don't).

The problem with mixing business and pleasure is it always ends up putting you in some sort of awkward situation.

BonkeyMollocks · 12/01/2013 19:58

Red they aren't friends - just random other page owners that are asking, people who do the same craft!

Most of my customers are strangers who have come across my page because I have worked my arse off to get it out there, so I am buggered if I am going to make it easy for someone else. Wink

namechanger I'm glad there is someone else who feels the same! that is it!

I had another cake lady ask me how to do one of the designs I put on my cakes. She started her message with "I know this might sound cheeky but..." Yeah damn right it's cheeky! Yanbu.

gimmecakeandcandy · 12/01/2013 20:01

Could you pm me a link to your page? Would love to see what you sell x

Theicingontop · 12/01/2013 20:01

Ooh me too me too :)

NcNcNcNc · 12/01/2013 20:06

I have this all the time! I took ages to source my supplies and then direct competitors contact me through etsy and ask if I'll tell them where from!

They usually start with a 'Sorry to be cheeky but...'

BonkeyMollocks · 12/01/2013 20:13

Lazy bastards! Angry

MarmaladeSkies · 12/01/2013 20:14
