You heard of The Smiths? 1980s indie band. He was their lead singer and song writer. The Smith were a kind of foundation of indie music and "Madchester" (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays etc). They were very young and had some controversial, attention-seeking stunts and lyrics and Morriseey was known for perorming with a daffodil in his pocket.
Many people (of my age group, late 30s/early 40s+) will wax lyrical about the depth and meaning of Morrissey's lyrics, that he is a poet and so on. I'd agree.
Morrissey and The Smiths were a big deal in the 1980s. Morrissey has continued to peform as a solo artist since The Smith broke up in the late 80s. His following is now pretty culty and he can be a bit of a idiot at times.
