I like to thiink I'm instilling great British qualities of hardiness and stiff upper lip

Yanbu.
Ds 6 does it's his uniform. Looks cute.

DS wears shorts to school all year round, with wool knee high socks. Sometimes his knees go blue but generally it's fine.

AnnIonicIsoTronic · 29/11/2012 20:20

May be worth mentioning that the actual garment had considerably less charm - albeit correspondingly better leg coverage.

yanbu.

I spotted 2 boys in shorts at school this moring.

I doubt DS would do it though, I'm usually walking along like the Michelin Man.

thereinmadnesslies · 29/11/2012 20:21

Are they uniform?

Goldenjubilee10 · 29/11/2012 20:24

-1 here this morning at 11am. I hate to think what it was at 0830. I wouldn't send ds to school in shorts.

BeatTheClock · 29/11/2012 20:26

I wouldn't at this time of year. Ds won't wear them anyway, not even in summer.

AnnIonicIsoTronic · 29/11/2012 20:28

Not uniform. But he picked them himself. And there was barely a flash of shin between the top of the socks & the bottom of the shorts. But the teacher obviously thought I was barking mad - she made him change!

YABU. It's winter. Confused

difficultpickle · 29/11/2012 20:33

Ds's old school wears shorts AYR. His new school wears lovely thick cords in the autumn and spring terms and shorts in the summer.

FeistyLass · 29/11/2012 20:34

My ds was coming home with goosbumps on his legs so we swapped into long trousers a few weeks ago. He'll probably grow up to have a petted lip rather than a stiff upper one Smile

beansmum · 29/11/2012 20:36

ds wears shorts all year round - they're slightly heavier fabric in his winter uniform. We're in NZ, but it's still cold in winter where we are - frosty and (occasionally) snowy. I think shorts are fine.

MrsMellowDrummer · 29/11/2012 20:38

My daughter refuses point blank to wear tights because they're itchy. So she wears her just under the knee pinafore dress (uniform - no alternatives allowed), and knee high socks (rolled down because she likes them that way). No real difference between that and shorts...

goralka · 29/11/2012 20:39

all of you who think shorts are fine in UK winter should go out wearing a mini skirt and no tights and see if you like it.

kilmuir · 29/11/2012 20:42

Do you wander round in shorts in this weather? Yabu

MrsMelons · 29/11/2012 20:42

DS has to wear shorts all year to school till he's at juniors. He wears long socks in the winter and short ones in the summer. He is well wrapped up really (vest, shirt, jumper, blazer and coat) so it is only his knees that are exposed although he has managed to fall over and cut them quite badly 3 times since starting in September.

It does look really cute though but the only draw back is that he now wears shorts all the time and I can't use the reason - its winter shorts are for summer anymore Grin

insanityscratching · 29/11/2012 20:50

The HT at dd's school is still in shorts and generally is until it first snows Hmm.Too cold for me though to put mine in shorts now though.

AnnIonicIsoTronic · 29/11/2012 20:54

I was wearing shorts until recently, when I got sick of the comments!

I like the idea of it, and there's a couple of boys at my ds's school that are still in shorts, but I've been going out with thermals under my trousers this week so I couldn't do it to my kids.

It does look cute, but knee high socks or shorts that are actually sorts are questionable.

DH would be wearing shorts at this time when he was in infants and jr school. According to MIL and DH himself, he would have ripped the knees of his pants and his mum would make them into shorts. Then again, they were used to the cold, their toilet used to freeze over

Our school has shorts as uniform all year round- but they are allowed to wear school coloured joggers over their shorts on days like this- it was 1degree this morning!

5madthings · 30/11/2012 00:33

There are a few boys at my childrens primary still wearing shortd, if your ds is happu to wear them.its fine :)

My ds2 wont wear them at all anymore even.in summer and ds3 wasnt keen. Ds4 wore them.in sept/oct but hadnt done recently, if he wanted to i would let him.

Dp still wears shorts even in winter, i have had the odd comment from other parents in the playground that he must be mad. Umm no he just doesnt feel the cold much.

Some children are the same and dont feel the cold, i agree they look.cute! If he is happy to wear them and still has a coat, hat, gloves etc as appropriate its fine :)

youngermother1 · 30/11/2012 00:53

My dh wore shorts all year round until 10. Only big boys wore trousers - also uniform was height based, not age, some some boys were still wearing shorts at 11.
