Nasty Tummy Bug - WWYD

DD is 14. She has just been sick for the fifth time and is feeling so very ill. She wants to die or for someone to knock her out. The other end is starting now. I think it's just time and plain water when she thinks she might keep it down. Has anyone got any tips to make her feel more comfortable - I just feel so sorry for her.

I've just got over the vomiting bug (38 weeks pregnant as well) it was horrid. Afraid it's a case of ride it out, sip water....no food until ready, i'd wait 24 hours.

I craved Lucozade after, think its a childhood crutch my parents instilled!

Get some rehydration salts as well in the morning, make you feel much better quicker.

Coca cola. Promise.

Definitely Coca-Cola, needs to be "proper" Coke, needs to be full fat, needs to be flat.

Sipped slowly it will settle her stomach and replace her sugars so she won't feel so much like a wrung out dishcloth. My friend thought I was nuts suggesting this, but when I poured her the Coke she was prostate on the sofa, looking green and when I left she was sat up, still pale, but a lot better than when I arrived.

Hope she feels better soon.

Dd and I are just getting over this. We got some ORS rehydration salts from tesco, and they really helped. Sips of that, or energy drink, and ride it out!

Fly - Yes because every teenage girl who throws up is pregnant...

Hmmmm, is this a case of not judging others by your own standards?

Thanks all. I think she's dropped off. Will get some coke in first thing.

Tiny sips of drink, I literally used a teaspoon when I had norovirus
Don't use immodium but paracetamol is good if she has stomach cramps or a temperature

Report
ShoeJunkie · 23/11/2012 23:04

Yy to no Imodium - I was always told that using it would be stopping nature getting the bugs out of the system by whatever means unpleasant though it is.

Hope your DD feels better soon.

Half Coke, half water. Tastes disgusting but it got me though Degue Fever. I wouldn't bother with drugs. They'll either go right through her or stop the normal progression of the bug.

Yes rehydration sachets or coke. Just the tiniest sips regularly will help.no food and def no dairy until she is 100% better

Poor love. Hope she feels better tomorrow.

Wow I hit a nerve ! I am not meaning to insult anyone, but I thought I had a tummy bug - (i was old-ish 29) and I was actually expecting. So I guess I'm stupid, ignorant and judgemental

agree with the flat cola. you can also put a little salt (tiny pinch per glas) in to replace the minerals she is losing. also some small bites of plain toast in between might help, it is much more pleasant to through up something rather then just bile...

We do flat coke, gatorade, dry toast or plain crackers.

licking ice pops if can't keep water down - doctor told me that when dd1 was a baby & it works

Report
marriedinwhite · 24/11/2012 16:11

Thanks all. Got some coke but she's not up to it; nor the lucozade sport but she's had three quarters of a bottle of vitamin water. Still really poorly and aching and all over now. Very very wimpy - am thinking it might be flu - will see how she is tomorrow.

Have to go out tonight and DH is away so hope that she will sleep mostly from now. Think she will and if she needs me I can be home in 10 minutes.

In the last fortnight everybody I know has had this. I thought the dc had escaped it but have been up all night and now all day tending to 5yo dd and 14mo ds. Both vomiting, both vile diarrhoea, fevers, hacking coughs, aches, pains, lethargy etc. My poor washing machine is groaning with the onslaught. DS thankfully is still bf. DD is sipping water and has had a couple of salty crisps. Everybody has said you just ride it out. Friend's dd ended up in hospital but she was 'just' dehydrated and needed some help for a while. Winter sickness bugs are blooming awful.

Sounds like rotavirus :( nasty nasty

Agree with flat coke. Also try sucking on a quarter lemon. Helps with nausea and nasty taste in mouth.

Report
ElaineBenes · 24/11/2012 16:37

Not much help to op but FYI NHS should be introducing rotavirus vaccine soon for young babies for whom it can be really dangerous.
