to find this vegetarian menu option rather uninspiring?

Our family are going to stay in a hotel tomorrow night. A relatively smart place, with a spa and a '2AA rosette award winning River Room Restaurant'. The dds and I are vegetarian, so I had a look at the hotel's menu on their website. The options for main course include:

- Line caught skate wing pan fried with capers, lemon, nut brown butter - £17 (sounds nice if you eat fish)

- Roast cornfed chicken breast, sage, onion, bread sauce - £15 (sounds nice if you eat chicken)

- Plate of carrots (vegetarian) - £12.95 hmm

To be fair, they do also have a tomato risotto - but on what planet does a 'plate of carrots' count as a main course? And how can you justify charging £12.95 for it?

I think we'll be visiting a restaurant in the town instead.

I had a 'vegan' option on an Emirates flight once which was raw sliced aubergine. That's it. Nice!

We used to go to a lovely little bistro-style restaurant where there were no vegetarian dishes on the menu at all. You simply asked the waiter for a vegetarian meal, and the chef would come to your table and chat about what you fancied eating today - he made the most amazing veggie meals.

<wistful sigh>

Well nothing yet from the hotel on their Facebook page but the question has attracted quite a lot of attention! 2 more posts and 33 'likes'!!

OP here again. After breakfast I asked a waitress about the plate of carrots.

Me: I saw on your dinner menu there is a vegetarian option of a plate of carrots. I'd that just a plate of carrots, or something else?

Waitress: it is a plate of carrots, but not as you know it. There's carrot and sweet potato mash, a savoury carrot cake, and grated carrots with...swede...or something. It's very nice.

hmm

do you know I love carrots - if it was what the waitress described I would order it!
It sounds like one of the dishes they do on masterchef - "carrots three ways"

Cahoots Sat 17-Nov-12 13:44:09

It still sounds mostly like 'a plate of carrots' albeit vamped up with the addition of , err, more orangy root vegatables grin

PMSL at Tiggy D'Amour's comment on their facebook page grin

JugglingWithPossibilities Sat 17-Nov-12 13:47:19

Sounds like they were trying to be understated in their description, but agree "Carrots three ways" might have sounded more tempting.

Namechangeforapropertythread Sat 17-Nov-12 13:47:45

But no protein?

JugglingWithPossibilities Sat 17-Nov-12 13:56:33

Or maybe after all this attention, Mumsnet, Facebook etc. they've quickly decided to fancy up their carrots a bit grin

ErikNorseman Sat 17-Nov-12 14:24:23

Carrots three ways?! PMSL. That's 3 side dishes, not a meal. And I wouldn't choose three carrot based side dishes anyway.

TiggyD Sat 17-Nov-12 15:03:09

Anybody on here ever had a carrot threeway?

fallingsun Sat 17-Nov-12 15:10:53

So it sounds like a main course of mash and coleslaw?!with carrot cake?!for £13?are they crazy?

MichelleObarmy Sat 17-Nov-12 15:18:52

'Carrots three ways' sounds like some sort of torturous BDSM practice.

12.95 for a plate of carrots, though...that is a BRAVE piss taking price.

AnnIonicIsoTronic Sat 17-Nov-12 15:32:50

Rofl @ the Facebook

(& it's also so meeeean towards some hapless duty manager having to deal with this somewhere!!)

AnnIonicIsoTronic Sat 17-Nov-12 15:35:05

Op - if I PayPal you £12.95 will you go & order it & post a full review with pictures?

I know otherwise my curiosity will get the better of me & I'll find myself on the train heading to Bedford...

TiggyD I actually knew some people at uni that had a carrot four-way...

OP please let Ann paypal you and review!

ToffeeCaramel Sat 17-Nov-12 16:43:50

It's carrots Jim, but not as we know it...

fallingsun Sat 17-Nov-12 17:01:36

Should this thread be linked to the Bedford Swan somehow so the management can understand how poor their vegetarian option is?can it be linked on their facebook page or something?!

Melpomene Sat 17-Nov-12 17:11:21

Sorry, we've left the hotel and are back at home now so it wouldn't be possible for me to order it even if you paid me! I don't think I would have wanted to have it even if someone paid me, anyway.

FeckOffWithYourXmasBollocks Sat 17-Nov-12 19:26:03

Tiggy! grin norty norty! wink

thenightsky Tue 20-Nov-12 14:14:16

Ahhhh.. they have got back to me on FB!

'Plate of carrots is a warm carrot mousse , carrot & potato terrine, spiced & coriander carrot cake, butter sauce, baby carrots, carrot puree, I will post a picture of one Chef has just made'.

joanbyers Tue 20-Nov-12 14:16:48

don't they have any other vegetables?

Woozley Tue 20-Nov-12 14:16:55

Sounds great. Can I get a side of broccolli with it though? smile

Have they never heard the saying 'variety is the spice of lifex'?
And that does sound suspiciously like what the poster further up the thread said shock
