AIBU?

to expect the caravan to definitely be clean before we arrive?

We are going to stay at my SIL's caravan soon. She only rents it out to family, friends, colleagues and their friends. She doesn't want to use an agency and doesn't charge much at all, and she charges a bit less for family rather than friends too.
We've only stayed there once, and that time my SIL had been in the caravan a few days before us, so had cleaned up herself before we got there. We had to rush home a day early as I fell ill and had to go to hospital, so I didn't get chance to clean up before another family member had use of the caravan immediately after us.
This time it's a bit different, it's someone that SIL vaguely knows who's in before us. DH was on the phone to SIL last night and it turns out that her usual cleaning arrangement is for each family to clean up after themselves i.e. she never gets a proper cleaner in. (She does however pop down to the caravan fairly often, perhaps once a month.) I was quite shocked at this, I cannot believe that she expects people to take over a caravan for a weekend/ week without anyone checking it over! AIBU to expect her to use a proper cleaner each time?
I have to confess that static caravans are not really my cup of tea anyway, I'm just going to keep DH happy, so I'm not sure if I'm being a bit snobby?

It really depends on how much she is charging people to use it.

Would you rather pay more to cover the costs of the cleaner?

I think 'leave it as you find it' is perfectly ok for a friends and family only rental.

How much does she charge people to use it?

£30 a night for family, £50 for friends, so it's not much at all, in fact I think she's silly to keep it so cheap!

I don't think she's being unreasonable tbh, she's giving you a low rate and only rents to family and friends. We do the same and expect people to leave it as they find it. Its not a big space so unlikely to get particularly dirty!

So am I just being overly paranoid that someone else will leave it full of pubes etc?

I really don't mind paying for a cleaner, it's just more the idea of trusting people I don't know personally to leave the place in a nice state.

You yourself have had to leave the caravan without cleaning it and I'm sure the next occupants survived. Smile

Take some dettol and what have you and be prepared to tell your dh togive things a quick wipe over. Even if it does need a clean it doesn't take long to go through a static caravan!

Your SIL isn't going to rent it out to people that she suspects wouldn't look after her property is she??

Hmm ffs, yes you're a snob

My mum rents out her caravan, makes sure it is cleaned before each new guest. Costs a lot more than £30 per night though - professional cleaners which she uses occasionally cost from £22-30 so you could always pay one from teh moeny you've saved.

I'm slightly baffled that you have left the van uncleaned for someone else but are worried someone else might also leave it uncleaned for you Confused

It isn't difficult to solve is it? Clean the caravan to your hearts content when you arrive.

PS - how do you cope with public toilets?

Yabu, she lets it to friends & family who she can trust to clean it after themselves except you I'm surprised she's letting you stay again.

Unless you want to double the cost then do it yourself!

OK I now accept that IABU thanks everyone for your comments.
Last time I left in a hurry, I had to be rushed into hospital with appendicitis. I didn't plan it! I know from very painful experience that things happen unexpectedly, so that's why I'm so shocked that she doesn't get a cleaner in.

Why didn't you or DH go back once you'd recovered to clean it? or paid smeone to clean it?

It's clearly way to big os a deal a big deal to you Hmm

I think you should have offered to pay her for a cleaner at the time (or your DH should have - I accept that you probably had other things on your mind).

One of the reasons you get it cheaper is that she doesn't have to pay a cleaner. If you want mates rates then you have to behave like a "mate"!

I think you should probably stick to hotels in future.

We have friends with a cabin in the mountains who do this.
He stopped renting through an agency, too much damage and things getting pinched. So now it's friends and family and it costs enough to cover electric and gas, so very cheap.
When any of us stay on our last day, we pack, fill the car with stuff and clean house, wipe everywhere, spray down the showers, vacuum and mop right through. The friend has made it clear we all have to do it.

Hire a cleaner, then.

just remembered that last year she was using a cleaner between non family staying there. Only just announced it to us last night that she'd stopped using him.
I will be sticking to hotels/cottage rentals after this stay. I'd rather pay more!

She probably found that most people leave it clean and tidy and paying a regular cleaner is a waste.

If you'd rather pay more, I have several things I could probably sell you.

I mean I'd rather pay 4 prices for 4 facilities and cleanliness than pay next to nothing for 1* facilities where I have to spend ages cleaning at the beginning and end of my stay.

well there you go - your choice is made. (personally I'd rather trust friends and family to do a good clean than a hotel cleaner - I've spent a lot of time in hotels...)

You could always arrange a cleaner to go in before and after you - probably still cheaper depending on your length of stay.
