When I'm skint I am skint it means I am down to my last £5 like I am now until Tuesday. My sister is always saying she is skint her benefits have been stopped cosmic something or other (she finished work 4 week ish ago) and benefits have messed up so it's all stopped except her CTC.

It's our mums birthday beginning of September and tonight mum, stepdad and some mates are going for a meal to whether spoons and then bowling. Me and Dh were meant to be going but as bowling is £11 each plus the meal we can't afford it said we wouldn't go. My sister sai she couldn't go as she was skint so mum said that's ok.

I've just spoke to my sister and she asked me if I was going over there today so I said no I can't afford it. She then went on that she was off to get ready because she was going for the meal with mum and stepdad and their friends. So I mentioned that I thought she was skint and she said 'i am so what'
My mum does that same thing 'oh I'm skint but were off out tonight drinking

I said to my sister when I'm skint I'm skint it means I'm down to my last whatever not that I can delve into my overdraft. And sister said 'so it don't matter'
:/

Aibu to think when your skint your skint and you can't delve into an overdraft? We dot have an overdraft btw

It pisses me off that

Different people mean different things by 'skint'. At least you're not spending money you don't have. Let it wash over you.

That's the thing though cybbo I can't. I have £5 to my name. I don't have an overdraft I am SKINT. We don't have any money available for a meal and bowling let alone a drink and £15 fr petrol to get there.

Cosietosie is right, everybody's definition of poor is different.

I remember getting wound up at uni when I really was skint, didn't know if my card would be accepted in shops, cashpoint certainly wasn't giving me anything. I was at my overdraft limit and I was 'proper skint'. My flatmate complained as if she was in the same boat, but actually she had no debt and was worried about being down to her last few hundred pounds.

Now though, I'm in a lot better position. No debt apart from the mortgage but I start to get jittery when savings are under about £3k. I suppose we have a lot more responsibilities now and I feel like we need a safety net. I often feel 'poor' even though I know I'm not by any means officially poor. I don't share these feelings with anyone else though, apart from DH as we're both similar.

Your sister may well consider herself poorer than you as she owes money and you don't.

I get very irritated by my sister who is a lot worse off than me but spends £20-£30 on frivolous things left right and centre and then moans about being poor whereas as well as being good earners we're careful on what we spend. I just want to shout, don't buy the makeup/DVD whatever then!! But obviously couldn't as I'm rich compared to her and therefore 'don't understand' despite having been there myself in the past.

Different people definitely feel 'poor' at different levels.

Yeah this annoys me too. I have a relative who is on a good salary, her DH is a partner in a solicitor firm, and she hasnt ever had to pay a penny for childcare. She shops every single day buying crap. Pure crap. She drinks every night etc. Her DH pays all the bills, so her 2k a month is just spending money really.

She goes on all the time about how skint she is and how awful it is and it really drives me mad. She once joked about how her daughter (3 at the time) had more money than I did.

Anyway, one day I had had enough. I had £40 in my bank to last me and DD a week while she was moaning about being skint. I told her she didnt know the meaning of the word and explained my situation. She was shocked but had this smug look on her face. I had to sit on my hands to stop myself punching her.

See my overdraft is used in this sort of situation, IF I know I can repay it off within the week.
Today I did the food shop early as we needed a few bits, my overdraft allowed me to do that as I get paid again Tuesday and that will more than clear it.

We do owe money though we owe a lot of money in debt I'm not going into it but we're behind with rent as well as other things. Take Friday for instance I went to mums and went i got there she wasn't in which she said she would be. I rang her and she was in town and told me to meet her at X place. So I drive there to meet her and sister. It was sister idea to go shooing she was buying DNephew toys that he doesn't need things like a basket with pretend fruit in it Hmm I mean why???
So I said he didn't need it he's got loads of toys at home and your skint. And she said but hell like it Confused

I don't get it. Like my last £5 will stay in my purse in case I run out of milk or bread or need something for a meal which I don't think I do. It's only till tues when our cb goes in but then ive got all the other school stuff to buy, shoes, lunchbags, socks pumps, shorts and Tshirt for P.E

If you don't have an overdraft obviously you can't 'delve into' it. However when I say skint, I mean I am at the limits of my overdraft and will be charged if I try to take more money out.

M0naLisa · 26/08/2012 11:51

If she goes £20 into her overdraft then her £50 week ctc will pay it back but then she'll be skint again by the end of the week. Hmm

I think would have smacked her donesticgoddess

yes thats what we do as long as we know the money is coming im comfortable using it, we have been skint properly skint to the point of paying the rent or eating some weeks it was hard , we are better off now so that feeling of dread is always there ,

Report
CaveJohnson · 26/08/2012 11:53

Why have an overdraft if you don't use it? £20 that is paid back within a month will be less than a quid in interest, I think you're being a bit daft.

FWIW I lift in my OD. I like to live on the edge.

Report
Morloth · 26/08/2012 11:55

I would never say I was skint.

But I have said I couldn't afford things, while we have the mortgage in my eyes we don't have any money, regardless of what the savings account tells me.

Isn't an overdraft a line of credit? So just another debt to pay then.

What shite. Plenty people whilst having their home repossessed due to bankruptcy will have said I wished I'd stayed in the black. Irresponsibility with money makes me mad. Especially stupid women with a million pairs of shoes, huge credit card bills and a lifetime of debt slavery ahead of them. Twunts.

By the way op you are being totally reasonable in not going. Don't feel bad about that.

Your sister obviously has a very different view of skint. Mine does to me, she is forever having money off my parents that I wouldn't dream of asking for, and pays for many things she's doesnt need

We can't get an overdraft due to bad credit. So like I say when I'm down to my last £5 it means exactly what I've said.
Unless I sell something.

Yes it is my mums birthday and it isn't for another 2 weeks and the meal was originally meant to be next weekend but cos her mates were fannying around with saying ahhh and oooh I dunno if we can make it she changed the weekend to bank holiday weekend when we can't afford it.

I think the OPs point is that with her family it isnt a one off. I think its the general attitude towards money thats the issue.
