Went to a lovely park this week with my 5, and we all had a great time, but there were 3 adults who moaned/told of not only my children but basially any other children that were playing with a water feature.

its a childrens park, a lovely park actually, with a big pirate ship in the middle, surrounded by sand and various other bits of play equipment and then to one side there are little spouts and bits that squirt water and a post with buttons to press to make hte water go higher, in diff directions etc. it was a warm day (occasional rain showers) but all the children were having a great time with the water feature, lots of little ones in swimsuits and others with trousers rolled up or just in pants and t-shirts etc. all getting very wet but having a BALL.

but twice some adults told them off for splashing, making the water squirt as they were getting wet, these adults were either standing nearby the water feature or sitting near it! seriously if you dont want to get wet MOVE, its a childrens play park with a WATER feature, if you stand/sit near it you WILL get wet.

the children including my ds3 looked really bewildered at being told off, esp as one lady shouted at them all twice that she was getting wet and could they not press the buttons that make the water spray!! ffs that is what is is FOR, they children were doing nothing wrong, actually they were all playing really nicely, the elder ones including my ds1 and ds2 were lifting up the younger ones who were too short to reach the buttons so they could have a go at pressing them. and they were all just having a ball, yes they were getting wet, but what they hell they will dry.

if you go to a park with a water feature the children WILL play with it, if you dont want to get wet, or you dont want your children to get wet, then either dont go or keep away from the water feature (park was big so plenty of other space and activities to play on) One mum and her toddler stood in amongst the spouts on the floor and then told my ds3 off for pressing the button to make the water spray as she didnt want her child to get wet!! ds3 pressed the button as the other children he was playing with told him to, they were counting "one, two, three...spray" and the child pressing would spray on the number three.

i was busy with my littlest just nearby so didnt get the chance to say anything to the miserable grown ups complaining, one left and was then later replaced by a couple who sat down by the water feature and then moaned and tutted loudly every time they got splashed and told the children to stop!!! just fucking move!!

sorry long and pointless, but it really annoyed me that the children were having sucha great time and playing so nicely and STILL you get miserable people moaning and telling them off!

i did say rather loudly that if people didnt want to get wet they should MOVE!! and told the children how nicely they were playing, ds3 just looked so bewildered at being shouted at, i told him not to worry and carry on and that some people are just grumpy, but watching 5 children in a play area is a bit of a feat, i need extra eyes! i would have had a word but had to chase round dd (19mths)

i did notice that the moaning adults got lots of dirty looks from other parents!

YANBU about the water feature but YABU to do the loud PA moaning thing, because that's always an unreasonable thing to do. The reasonable thing to do is to say to the whinger's face "Oh come on, that's what they're for, why don't you move a bit further away if you don't want to get splashed?"

Olympia2012 · 04/08/2012 18:28

The tutting and comments are one thing but shouting at your children??

Yabu not to have got up and go over to see what the 'problem' was. How dare they shout at your children!

Were they on benches or sat on the ground?

Maybe, just maybe, the spray was getting carried in the breeze if the benches were placed at a deliberate distance.... Maybe.

yes pa moaning is not ok but justified i think as i was busy trying to keep an eye on 5 children and chasing dd around, the park was busy and lots of the equipment is a bit big for her, but of course she wanted to go on it all. had i have had the chance i would have gone over to them said something. but by the time i had reassured the boys they were not being naughty and then relocated dd the moment had passed iyswim?

i just dont understand the logic of the adults, who just seemed determined to be sour faces!

some were on benches, one was stood in amongst the valves in the floor that squirt the water.

there are benches all round the park, two directly by the water feature, not good planning as you will get wet if you are sat on them, but the benches were already wet when they sat down as was the floor all around its obvious if you sit there you will get wet. i had already sat there for a bit, but didnt get the chance to do much sitting with dd wanting to explore.

and it wasnt windy so water wasnt being carried, its just the spray goes all around in a specific area, which you can tell very clearly ie there is a bit wet circle around the water feature! it is daft to have benches there, but others were sat there and getting wet and they just laughed.

and yes i should have said something to shouty woman, who yelled at them to stop pressing the buttons as they were getting wet, tho after shouting at them twice she got up and moved thankfully.

Some people are BoNkErS!! I'd have done what you did as well - lots of 'NO it's fine darling, people who don't want to get wet shouldn't be standing so near, you aren't doing anything wrong, just ignore them :) '

I can never understand people on holiday who lie next to the pool with the slides and then moan that they're getting wet as people splash off the slides into the water.

My DH loves to hurl his vast bulk down the slides and drown lightly splash the moaners. Grin

Honestly, don't go near splashy slides/water features if you can't bear to get wet.

Was it a play item or a water feature.

5madthings · 04/08/2012 18:58

a play item or water feature?

you mean is it mean to be played with? yes its int he childrens park, and designed for them to play with ie buttons to press, valves that can move, little spouts you can change the direction of etc. its just to the side of the pirate ship so fits the theme i guess and its all surrounded by sand and there is drainage built in, its veyr much designed to be played with :)

Near where I live there's a park and there are blocks of flats whose entrance goes out directly onto the park. There is a children's play area close to one of the blocks of flats (think maybe twenty metres away).

Last time I was there a little girl fell quite badly and started crying for her mum and someone in the flat started shouting about the noise. If you can't stand the sound of playing children, surely you choose not to rent or buy a flat next to a playground ?

It sounds like a lovely park with lots of fun for the kids, what a bunch or idiots the adults are to sit near the water, they deserved to get extra wet.
