Sorry for posting here but I know that you normally get quick answers.

I adopted my little girl 18 months ago and haven't had to deal with anything like this so far.

She has some sort of bug and has been sick for the past few days. Not eating very much at all. She also had a runny tummy this morning.

I'm worried about her getting dehydrated and don't know at what point I should take her to the doctors etc. Can anyone please advise as I feel a bit shaky about it?

Call your GP and get advice - don't take her in yet as there's a possibility you could spread bugs. Is she eating/drinking ok?

Oh thank you. I think it's the not eating that's panicking me as she loves her food.

Should have added, she's not a baby - she's 5. How long do these things normally last for? I feel like such a numpty asking

What Sirzy said, but no milk if you can help it.

Really the not eating isn't an issue for me.

No-one's hungry when they have an upset stomach and I'm sure she'll make up for it when she's well again.

The fluids are the most important thing for now.

If she has a bug really you need to try and starve her for 24 hours....make sure she drinks plenty of fluids - maybe get some of that diaralite stuff so she doesnt become dehydrated. If she wants to eat make it something very plain like dry toast or something like that.

Hope she feels better soon.

Tummy bugs are usually over in a couple of days. To check if she's dehydrating, pinch (lightly, it won't hurt) the skin on the back of her hand. It should spring back into place if she's getting enough fluids, the longer it takes, the more she needs water.

Can you get out to a pharmacy to pick up some rehydration drinks? (Usually powder you add to water.)

DD has had very similar to this, she also has a rash with it and is lethargic. Doctor told me the same as everyone else on here plenty of fluids and don't worry about food it only lasts a few days at most!

It is horrible the first time your little one is ill like this but I agree with the others, keep the fluids up.
I am a great believer in giving kids what they want at times like this (within reason!). If I am ill but and not hungry then want toast I will have toast etc same with kids I think they know what they need.

Also might be worth trying Bitter lemon or tonic water www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1527213-To-panicif she will drink it (not diet) as it has naturally occurring quinine in which settles stomachs

Diarlyte is great

Can use for babies in smaller doses but from two you can just make a glass up with water and keep offering ( just helps replace any lost salts/ minerals etc)

Echo what others have said if she doesn't want to eat then just offer plenty of liquids. Ice lollies good if she will have as cooling and replaces lost liquids.

If she has more than 72 hrs I would give your doc or NHS direct a call.

ice lollies work too, but not ice cream ones.

The DDs had a bug once where anything which hit their tummies came straight back up, they didn't keep even water down for 24 hours. That was horrid and quite scary too.
