AIBU?

To feel confused about this

OK, this isn't that big a deal, but I am slightly bewildered, confused and a bit dissatisfied about this. I don't understand, basically.

Background first. For years I've been saying to dh that we need to get something which will allow us to transfer all our music on cassette and vinyl onto cd. For years he has been saying he has something which does that and he will dig it out, and for years he hasn't (I'm used to this waiting and have the patience of Job).

Anyway, this morning I was looking through one of those crap catalogues which have lots of incontinence underwear and old lady shoes and occasionally something vaguely interesting. Today it had a gadget which was exactly what we needed to transfer our music... So I pointed it out to dh, wo wandered into the sitting room and came back with a brand new, boxed, never-opened gadget for exactly this! He then said that it had come with his new computer which I had had built for him last year for his birthday. So he'd had this thing for nearly a year. So I asked about the other gadget which apparently did the same thing which he had been going to dig out for me for at least the last 5 years or so. He didn't know what I was talking about.

So now I think that for years he's been pretending that he had this gadget when he hadn't.

Why? Why would you do that? Why would anyone do that? It wasn't important or urgent, it was just a thing we could get sometime to do this long boring job with sometime. Why pretend he had the means? What was the point?

Any ideas?

Because he couldn't be arsed to look into it and work out what was needed?

Can you link me to the gadget please, btw, I'd quite like one too :) [lazy] I have looked into finding a way to link my stereo to the laptop but a gadget would be good.

Just be very careful about copyright, I only realised recently that you are not allowed to copy cd's onto mp3 players, officially that is! Grin

I have a friend like this. I don't understand him either. He just makes things up for no reason, and then forgets the things he has made up.

Did you buy anything from the catalogue? I often find myself tempted by the bulb catalogues for no good reason.

Really, Ithink? I thought you were allowed to make copies onto different media if it was just for your use Confused

Apparently not, it was on the news recently. I had always thought that was the case, but it seems that they (in their wisdom and not to make extra money or anything) have decided that copyright exptends to making copies for whatever purpose.

Sorry, had to go out.

The things I really really want copies of are not commercial recordings, but personal recordings of performances I was involved with where there are no problems with copyright or permissions, and are purely for personal use. I just want them off tape as they're going to get stretched and unusable soon.

Thumb witch, it is a Citronic Audio Capture Device, AC-1USB, stock code 128.515! here? I have only just opened the box, so can't say whether it's any good yet. Knowing the guy who built dh's machine, it probably is though.

Have just read the instructions and it only seems to output to MP3, which is not really what I want.

I think I'll ask dh for his other one - the one he's been about to dig out for me for years! (Or is that a bit mean? Grin )

No, do it! Grin

Thanks for the link - I need it to be transferable to CD though, not MP3 (don't have an MP3 player) so might have to continue my other search.

Although of course I'll only be using it for non-copyright stuff

Turn it all into mp3s on the pc, then burn them to CD thumb

Oh does that work, Pom? Am amazingly technoincompetent when it comes to music stuff! Thanks :)

we burn Cds from MP3 all the time

Jux · 02/06/2012 15:34

Thumb witch, I was hoping to transfer to PC and then burn CDs from there, but not MP3 files. If it did lots of file types, wmp, wav, etc, it would have been exactly what I wanted. Curse you, iTunes, without you MP3s wouldn't be nearly so prevalent and we'd have better choice!

I can't ask him now as he's asleep, but when he wakens.......

IIRC, it was also illegal to copy music onto cassettes and then to burn CDs. I really wouldn't worry about it Grin

oh back in the day thats how we got music especially as teenagers taping the charts on a sunday was the norm Grin

Mrsjay but you had to keep stopping the tape so that you didn't get any speaking on it Grin never worked though

I just used to let them waffle on for a bit and just stop start the top ten , I cant even remember who the DJ would have been ,

If these files are MP3 though, then I think that a lot of the audio info is lost, whereas if they're turned into proper audio files it won't be; flac or wav are much higher quality.

To answer the OP for a sec: no, I don't think YABU to feel confused about why he lied about having the machine. It is a bit weird tbh. And his denying all memory of ever saying it is like gaslighting.

Of course, he could genuinely have thought he had a machine for it but couldn't be arsed to dig it out and now he's got this more recent one he's forgotten all about it.

Has he got form for lying? If not, I'd write it off as a brain fart on his part.

Madonna, thank you for remembering the initial point of my thread! I'd nearly forgotten it myself Smile

He's not exactly a liar, but he seems to do this, but not on important things, just silly things like this. I just don't see the point. He doesn't gain anything at all from it. Except mild bemusement from me once in a while which doesn't last long as these things are so unimportant.

MrsJay, yes, you can, but I'm unsure about the process. As I understand it, MP3s don't have all the audio information which is something to do with why they can be such small files. So if something gets recorded as an MP3 how can the 'lost' info then be resurrected when it's converted to wav?
