Came up in conversation today in the office, that I have worked as a barmaid; my colleagues where Shock and I was equally Shock that non of them have...I thought EVERYONE had worked behind a bar at some point in their life???

Ive had variousjobsinmylife, including factory work, working in kitchens, dog kennels, cleaning, callcentres; and now Im a professional

it gotme thinking--i went to uni and worked holidays/ evenings and weekends...now i think about it, hardly anyone else did that!

Am reading 'Chavs' at the minute and the author makes that very point....very large majorityof politicians have never done that kind of job and so cannot relate to the working classes AT ALL. It really hit home, how very far removed from normal folk, politicians are these days

But,most of yous have done/do these kind ofjobs-right?

I've never worked in a bar but have worked in a shop and also cold-called double glazing sales. IMO people who haven't done jobs like that have been mollycoddled by their parents so haven't needed to.

I would think so, yes. Personally I've never done bar work, but I've cleaned toilets and offices and done breakfast waitressing in a B&B. I would assume you were probably quite posh if you had NEVER done that kind of work.

I've never worked behind a bar. I have worked in a supermarket.

And that is absolutely the problem with today's politicians. And yesterday's and the day before that and the day before that...

I have. First job at 12 washing up in a cafe (and toilets), then chip shop at 14 (till 21 all through college and when I first started actual work as the pay was shite!), bar work on a Sunday from being about 17 and even now I have a professional job I'm not too above pulling pints in my sisters pub if she gets let down.

All these jobs I would go back to in a heartbeat if needs must or the pay was as good as my day job!

Yes, and I LOVED them.

I worked in pubs and restaurants, continued to do so part time even after going into full time work.

And right now, i'd love to work in a supermarket - especially on the tills, i've always fancied it!

When I was at school and while I was a student I worked in Boots, John Menzies, as a waitress and in a loudspeaker factory. I also temped in an office and spent a summer collecting and counting spider mites on hop plants.

Yes, bar and supermarket as a student, shop work/bar work between degree and first graduate job, and recently shop work and now twighlight home care (glorified cleaner) as we can't afford the childcare for me to go back to my full time professional job. I thought I was done earning minimum wage Angry

I worked as a waitress for 4 years, and then as a barmaid for another 3. My waitressing job started aged 14 (well, it was friends of my parents who ran the restaurant and who gave me a lift home)
I bought my first mini hifi system with all the money I earnt.

I loved waitressing. All the tips....:)

Oh yes. I loved bar work, in the first bar I worked in. The next bar was as rough as fuck, I quit on the second occasion I found myself hiding behind the bar from the flying bottles when it all kicked off.

I lost loads of weight when I was a cleaner in a hotel.

No... I didn't have a job as a teen, then worked in a nursery toddler room through university (around course hours - 2 hours per day/ 3x per week) and trained to be a teacher, so got a job teaching straight out of Uni. I've never had a job like you describe. Perhaps the nursery work is considered that for me?

No to all of those jobs, but when I was at school I did a paper round and had a Saturday job in a DIY shop, then at BHS.

At 14 I worked Saturdays in the local cake shop (free cakes to take home if there were any left Grin)

When I was 16 and at college I switched to the small local supermarket and did several weekday evenings and Saturdays, just stacking shelves or on the till.

I think it hugely depends on your family's work ethic, and of course, if you need or want the extra money.
