AIBU?

To think Wine is overrated?

I just don't get what all the fuss is about, I've tried to 'like' it, and wish i did, but I would much prefer a vodka and coke.

DP opens a bottle to have with dinner and I do have a glass but to me, it just tastes like
vinegar! Whenever we go to people's houses for dinner, out comes the wine!

Red wine gives me a splitting headache so I only drink white and rose. Ive tried loads of different bottles but none have really hit the spot. Where am I going wrong? I am determined to enjoy a bottle of wine! I want to know what all the fuss is about.

What do you all drink? I need an inoffensive wine, if that makes sense, nothing overpowering, not too acidic (!) Also a wine that doesn't give you a banging headache the next day! TIA!

I drink JD and Coke. Not a big wine fan either, but I wouldn't say it's "overrated", I'm just not keen on it myself.

If I have to drink wine I find rosé palatable, and fruitier whites. The amateur wine drinkers' choices :)

YABU

It's nectar

A breast feeding so can't have much and had none for 9 months - I miss it

I like dry whites so try a Chablis or a Sancerre

For red, Barolo is nice

Something in the middle and really light is Tarrango (Brown Brothers do one) - its red but best served chilled - very inoffensive and great for Summer

I didn't drink wine until I was about 30.

Before that I was exactly like the OP.

You don't HAVE to like wine.

Sauvignon blanc is very easy drinking as a starter wine

I feel like I'm being cheated as well, due to not liking wine. However I'm not that keen on any alcohol and have just given up on trying.

stick to your vodka and coke and leave the wine for meeeeeee!

seriously no rule says you have to like it.

how much do you typically spend per bottle? that could be where you're going wrong...

I'm not a wine snob either! I just meant that some of the cheaper wines can be a bit rough until you find one that suits you. Or you numb your tastebuds into submission Grin

Most people I know started with drinking sweeter whites Riesling, Moselle, nothining aged in oak, I found in England it was nearly always Chardonnay. The older I got the less I liked sweeter wines but I still do not like ones aged in oak barrels.

Trial and error till you find one you like.

Some of you have touched on a good point - there is a lot of snobbery attached to wine -why is this?

I've sat in restaurants with people whilst they dissect the wine, i didn't haven't clue what they were on about but it sounded so pretentious. Grin

Personally I think you're drinking the wrong bourbon. Try something more refined like makers mark or bulleit and then you'll look cooler than all the winos Wink

I know this is going to sound snobby but i think people who don't drink wine and beer and just drink spirits and mixers have slightly childish palates tbh.

And, mixers is a bit naff. I wouldn't want to shag a man who drank vodka cokes, would you?

But, then again, I don't like sweet drinks very much.

YABU unless you've tried lots of different types and qualities. Some wine really does taste like vinegar. Plenty of it doesn't.

Absolut is my fav vodka. DP thinks all vodka tastes the same but I disagree. I cannot drink Smirnoff.

Vodkas are like wine in that respect, the more you pay the better they get.
