Maybe not the right place to air this but I'd like to drum up as much support !

save our geese

hiddenhome Fri 10-Feb-12 16:25:43

Why do they want to slaughter these geese?

Knowing them, probably sell them for profit!

hiddenhome Fri 10-Feb-12 16:32:30

Why do they want to cull them though? Are they causing damage or something? <genuine interest>

There are various reasons, most stated in the link. Quite lengthy but worth the read.

RuleBritannia Fri 10-Feb-12 16:37:51

Well, geese do taste nice. That said, their poo is larher than dogs' poo and can be a nuisance in fields and parks. They damage crops, too. We put dogs down so why not geese?

RuleBritannia Fri 10-Feb-12 16:38:01

*larger

aldiwhore Fri 10-Feb-12 17:04:50

Usuallu a cull is done because of disease of over population. They are not suggesting slaughtering ALL geese, and over population of one species can damage the whole balance of the environment.

It looks at first sight to be a case of management, rather than the desire to make a quick buck on goose fat.

If I wasn't human, I'd probably support a human cull tbh, as we're a menace

Windemere is managed, the animals are too, the geese have been attracted there, bred in large numbers, possibly too large and to restore balance the cull is probably the best idea.

Its not nice, but we fiddle with 'the wild', we manage it, and we have to manage it well. Even the horrible bits.

aldiwhore Fri 10-Feb-12 17:05:11

or overpopulation...

valiumredhead Fri 10-Feb-12 17:07:22

They did this in London a few years back - it was over population as far as I can remember and they get quite vicious in large groups.

valiumredhead Fri 10-Feb-12 17:07:52

London parks I mean.

MaisyMooCow Fri 10-Feb-12 17:25:53

aldi I'd support a human cull too! Our overpopulation is causing this planet so much trouble it makes geese poo fade to insignificance.

aldiwhore Fri 10-Feb-12 17:28:36

Its not JUST the geese poo though is it? Its the whole negative effect of too much of it on other species, the effect on the whole natural population, the effect on the plant life of geese overeating, on the animal population, everything.

I don't particularly like the human race, but we have to manage the shit we create, and sometimes a big cull redresses the balance.

catgirl1976 Fri 10-Feb-12 17:28:57

I'm sure they are not doing it because they have some odd goose blood lust or fancy some foie gras. Sad as it is if they need to be culled............well sad

As long as it is done as humanely as possible

CrabbyBigbottom Fri 10-Feb-12 17:51:02

Hmm... I can see your point, but I don't think it's unreasonable to manage the numbers of canada geese. They are a large, aggressive, non-native species which bully other waterfowl, cause damage to river banks, cause damage to crops and leave enormous amounts of shit which has the potential to be a health risk.

I would much rather see them culled and the meat sold for consumption, than to see them culled and those lives just wasted, personally. I've often wondered why it's not legal and accepted for people to be able to shoot canada geese for food - they are an introduced species which has become a nuisance, in the same way that grey squirrels have.

I despise killing for the sake of killing, but I can see valid reasons in this case.

redyam Fri 10-Feb-12 18:05:51

Nice that a few posters are supporting human genocide. Anyway, geese are quite tasty.

Deflatedballoonbelly Fri 10-Feb-12 18:13:35

Why do people care if they are causing damage? That kind of statement REALLY pisses me off.

Dustinthewind Fri 10-Feb-12 18:17:55

'aldi I'd support a human cull too!'

Are you volunteering you and yours to be first in line? Or is it all the other, unnecessary people you are thinking of culling?
Have you added children to the planet? Tut Tut.

fivegomadindorset Fri 10-Feb-12 18:20:15

Dirty water ss not allowed to run into clean water sources so the farmer who allows this woul be heavily fined by DEFRA so that fact is wrong.

Westcountrylovescheese Fri 10-Feb-12 18:23:25

I was attacked by geese as a child, they can be very vicious...

MoreBeta Fri 10-Feb-12 18:24:56

Unfortunately they do cause a lot of damage and in large flocks can eat a lot of crops. They used to land on our farm in large flocks and just stand eating winter wheat for weeks. They are big birds and quite viscious too if approached.

Canada geese really have no natural predators and hence have grown to unsustainable numbers and do have to be controlled. It does not mean eradication of the species - just a controlled cull.

valiumredhead Fri 10-Feb-12 18:26:04

And they steal your picnics! shock grin

I've signed the petition but am slightly regretting it after reading the 'human cull' comments.
