AIBU?

not to be in the least bit bothered...or even particularly aware...about whether or not my 3 year old eats sushi?

2 parents at a 5 year old's birthday party today were discussing this.
One was bemoaning the fact her child wouldn't eat sushi and the other was chuckling about hers only eating things like teriyaki and cucumber rolls!

My 2 YO played with a bit of pasta at lunch today

I've only had the shitty tescos ones when they're in the cheapo section, but if they're representative of sushi I think it's a bit overrated.

Y'know, in the 'make your mouth water'/'I've got to have that to eat' stakes.

You should have said 'Oh, what a shame, little Tarquinius just loves to make his own sushi' and sauntered off looking smug.

BlastOff tee hee, I should really! They were actually nice, normal-seeming people until this came up...obviously their desire that their young children should eat sushi changed ALL this and I shall have to steer clear lest I start seeking out edamame for my DCs' snacks.

Frankly, I'm having any of mine adopted if they won't eat lemongrass houmous.

IMHO... don't you find that what people say is sushi is actually the rice roll things, with maybe a bit of cucumber and tuna in it?

They're fairly innocuous but DS doesn't like them for some reason. I think it's the teexture.

You should have offered their PFBs a Fruit Shoot.

And no, Tesco day-old sushi is NOT representative.

Sushi is made with warm rice - the stuff you get in Tesco, M and S etc are not sushi - your child obviously knows this and doesn't care to try non authentic cuisine.

I wish my 3yo was eating sushi. Instead he is naked, cannoning up and down the hall on his Plasma car and scoffing Mr Krisps. With a K.

My dd1 does eat sushi (albeit she's only tried the aforementioned supermarket brand shite) & it fucks me right off. She peels the 'yucky' seaweed off, makes a hell of a mess & leaves little of the overpriced manky healthy morsels for me, so I have to eat her rank cheese sarnie.

But then she is a dustbin who shuns only carefully crafted Annabel Karmel meals, luckily I found this out early.

Arf at this, was discussing my kids eating habits with a friend the other day and how dd is a cucumber freak and asks for it in preference to sweets. We both agreed this was just not normal ;0)
But sushi? Really? I have 2 faddy little buggers and ds thought I was feeding him arsenic the other day because I snuck a little steak onto his plate. He is 7

I've never tried sushi and I'm 40!

(In my defence, there are no sushi places at all where I live, otherwise I would have by now, I'm sure!)

I haven't tried sushi, let alone my kids
Those kind of parents (in the OP) make me want to feed my dcs chicken nuggets and toxic squash. They may be entirely responsible for the rest of the country not eating healthily

The Cub loves sushi, he also loves fruit shoots and sausage rolls.

Children eat what they like why worry?

Sushi is good small kid food because it's finger food. Most commercial sushi is just rice with a bit of prawn/ cucumber/ tuna/ omlette on it rather than raw fish. My kids love Yo Sushi for the colour coded bowls and choice, am glad there aren't many restaurants up here as it can cost a fortune. Making your own can be fun and cheap. You then realise how much you get ripped off buying the stuff.
I don't care what other people's kids like/ dislike though, unless they are staying for tea, then it's a pain if they only eat 3 things although now they're teenagers that is rarely a problem and I just have to provide enough.

mofo that's classic... My DH saw a kid of about 2yrs in a pushchair eating a Maccy D burger - but this was in London. You know it happens because of the literature you see in the doc's surgery.

I hate these bloody food competitions. If a kid wants to eat sushi fair enough, but don't make out like they are going to be some amazing gourmet for it.

Right, I'm off to make brunch for DS - samphire and oyster frittata :o

Pedantic alert!

Sushi does not mean raw fish. That is sashimi. Sushi is the sweetened rice the other parts are placed upon or rolled on. So not liking fish is not an excuse to not eat sushi.

As long as they eat focaccia and sundried tomatoes I think they still qualify as middle-class.

Noo, thinking supermarket shitty pre-made crap is representative of sushi is like thinking a supermarket ready-meal lasagne is representative of Italian cuisine! The Tesco one is particularly vile.

Sushi is my favourite food and my DCs like it too, but that's not a statement about me!

True Tee, but when people don't understand why kids won't eat "sushi" they are usually thinking of raw fish, not small rice chunks with a bit of omlette on top.

I remember conversations like this because at 18m my dd adored blue cheese, olives and croissants and I remember thinking it would get expensive if she developed any more deli/bakery habits. (She didn't, went firmly down the mcnuggets route at about 2). But children's food choices can be surprising so I think it's normal to talk about it. Little girl who came today asked for a bowl of lettuce which I thought was v. cute.

So maybe the party mums weren't meaning to be superior?

And anyway, sushi is pretty much just rice so hardly worth a mention.

What about home made sausage rolls rather than Greggs? Or oven chips rather than fried? These are DS1's (13 yo) ideas of healthy options! Is he proper posh or what? Grin

Dd is now 6 and her favourite place to go for dinner is yo sushi! Although as a disclaimer my friends all laugh as she will eat anything! Italian, Spanish,Mexican,Chinese, etc. the only thing she is not keen is raw tomatoes.

I Was far to lazy to do different meals and weaned her with whatever I was eating. I too will eat almost anything. By the way I don't discuss what she eats with people as I feel it's almost stealth boasting and I have really just been lucky.
