AIBU?

To dodge school this morning for GP visit for worms?

DD3 has worms. No mistaking them. She's had a really distressing night, unsettled, tearful and after some really covert behaviour (armed with torch, vaseline and cotton buds), I spotted them.

Poor little thing. She's been behaving oddly for days - angry, irrational and moody. This explains it all now.

I know (after much googling in the early hours) that I can get an over the counter preparation, but am tempted to get to GP with her first thing. Can they prescribe bigger guns for these little bastards worms? I want to dose her up at the earliest opportunity instead of waiting for her to return from school.

Does this justify a morning off?

Personally, I'd keep her off till its clear anyway, if she's in that much distress. She'll only be scratching her bottom all day and the other kids will take the piss out of her if its too obvious.

troisgarcons thank you. Yes, am sorely tempted. She's 7 and very self conscious about most things.

Off to boil wash bedsheets now.

The over the counter tablets are very effective. As effective as prescribed-only need prescribed if child underline 1

They don't itch all the time and night time is when they are active. No need to keep her off school, unless she's really tired from bad night? If it were me I'd take her in late so I could take her to chemist first thing and dose her. That way the buggers will be dead by tonight

Keep her off, a prescription is free too! Let it settle down, scrub under those nails & give cuddles (even if they are a bit arms lengthy!)

You don't need to go to the doctors but I would keep her off school. Poor thing must be miserable.

Hope you get rid of the little buggers soon.

Over the counter medicine for worms is the same as what you get on prescription, so personally I'd weigh the inconvenience of having to sit and wait in a waiting room vs the cost of buying myself, rather than effectiveness.

Really, really important: treat the whole family. No point if just treating her alone.

No need to boil bedsheet, but make a point of not wafting them around ie take off carefully and fold over on themselves. This is so worm eggs don't go flying in the air and resettle on your beautifully made new bed.

Lots and lots of handwashing for everybody in the family, particularly obviously after a visit to the toiled and before eating.

Keep your DD's fingernails short.

No need to keep her off school wrt contagiousness (I presume she is fully clothed at school Wink), but keep her at home if she is tired/miserable after a bad night.

They are hideaous, aren't they? Hope you are shot of them soon.

Much appreciated, everyone Smile

Keeping her off - she's just appeared, puffy eyed and still tearful. Have phoned my Father (who is an absolute legend it must be said) and he's going to fly over to the chemist to get treatment for us all.

Am squirming at the very thought of them parasitic bastards.

Also towels and sponges/flannels harbour the eggs

They are pretty hideous- we are regularly infected as dd1 is dedicated finger sucker!
