to not understand why nowhere local has a fireworks display today

I mean, WTF... Bonfire night is tonight and the local events have been last weekend, next weekend, the middle of this week, but none tonight.

Even the one's that have been odly dotted about don't start their displays till 9pm, some 10pm

AIBU to expect somewhere to have a bonfire night display, on bonfire night at a child friendly time when it's dark by half 5 anyway? Or is a weird sussex thing that no where except Lewes (and stupdily overpriced fontwell) is supposed to do anything on Bonfire night?

We went to one last night (there were a few yesterday this one was nearest)

It does seem odd that there aren't many today. The local scout group has one tonight at 7pm. Might be worth checking in your area?

We have one in the park tonight.

That's a bit odd - most places have something on.

I am going to my local one at the docks tonight - doors open at 6pm and the display is at 7.30.

Especially with it being a Saturday?
Maybe councils are too skint for fireworks?

I hate them anyway so won't be going over the door.

YANBU! I've been looking, it's lindfield, cuckfield or other places 20 miles away...local one was on wednesday for some reason! Just got back from holiday on thursday and assumed there would be one to go to tonight :(

Well, have you pulled your finger out and organised a display at a suitable local venue? No? Then you have nothing to complain about, so YABU.

We have a great one, locally organised, lots of people mucking in.

Our one is organised by the local school, church and community centre. The council stopped putting one one about 5 years ago and these people stepped up and organised one.
Its got a massive bonfire and a good 30 mins of great fireworks - its free to

Prehaps try to rally others for next year?

Bonfire / firework displays are thinner on the ground than they used to be because of insurance costs. In the past there were so many people-burning incidents that regulations were tightened up.

Lindfield has a great one, very child-friendly tonight.
Many of the teens go to Lewes. So where are you OP?
A lot of the bonfire societies warned that they were struggling back in the summer and needed support.

there's one in hove (nevill area) that starts at 6.30.
we are looking at lindfield.

lindfield is fancy dress, which put me off a bit, having recently done halloween costumes.

how would one dress up for bonfire night? they say torches will only be handed out to those in costumes, for the procession...

Having been involved in our school display, I can fully understand.

  1. The company who do ours (they're from Sussex as it happens) are horrendously busy. We had ours last Sunday because we have to have the company director do it because of...
  2. Local residents complaining about noise and mess. One resident in particular actually.

If it wasn't always so successful and popular, we may well have given up holding it after the hassle we had one year.

Spread over a couple of weekends they've got more chance of a decent audience too. Some of us go to several celebrations.

soup, yes, i can see that now re issues of doing it 'on the night'. but i'm with the OP in thinking there'd be more going on on the actual night as well.

those of you in sussex... i heard ashhurst do a good one usually... anyone when know if/ when it is on?

any knowledge of costume themes/ etiquette for bonfire night?

Report
DownbytheRiverside · 05/11/2011 15:17

It's village rather than professional Notting Hill, there's some doubling up with Halloween costumes, some teens will probably be zombies left over from the Brighton festival, some facepainting and a lot will not be wearing any sort of fancy dress. Parking is tricky, better off being prepared to walk a bit rather than get tangled up.
There's usually a procession with a guy or two, a proper big bonfire and the fireworks last. Lots of local small children.

we've got one in town, but tbh it feels to me that there is more emphasis on halloween nowadays, when I was a kid (dim and distant past) bofire night was made a fuss of and halloween non existant really.

The two local to me (2 miles in opposite directions) are both on tonight. They are usually on separate weeks, but with tonight being a Saturday, well! Don't think I'll be going out though, the displays have been always been the same every year since, oh, 2003 at least Grin
