we put a claim in for housing and council tax benefit as we are low income, in jun we were told we were entitled to £95 housing benefit a week and our council taxwould now be £105 a year, i rang them to check and they said it was right

got a letter yesterday to say it was wrong, actually we get £55 housing benefit and have to pay £600 council tax.... and we also have to repay everything we were over paid (comes to £1100) because when they processed our claim they didnt put the figures in right even tho i gave them wage slips, bank statements, tax credit entitlement letters etc

If they had told us the real entitlemt to begin with we would have paid it, now we are in debt because they did it wrong!!

aibu to be absolutely livid!

I would get advice from the CAB. If you did everything in your power to ensure they had correct information then I'm sure it puts you in a strong position to negotiate payments that don't cause you hardship, if indeed you're made to pay at all.

YANBU to be annoyed and upset, I think going to CAB is a good idea.

I expect lots of people will come along in a bit to say you are lucky to get any "handouts" in the first place, blah blah blah, just ignore themWink

Do check that you have to pay back, if child tax credits make a mistake then you shouldn't have to repay for example (not that that's worked in our case but still). We were hugely overpaid by child tax credits (despite me repeatedly telling them they just kept on paying in) - they removed a zero from dh's salary Hmm. Anyway we are paying back at a low rate each month - it will take years but far more manageable.

Agree about CAB
