Buying alcohol for teenager

17 year old dd going to house parties where drink is drunk. She drinks other peoples, usually one or two wickeds(sp). She says.
Shes asked if she can take some wine to the next one.
On the basis that she will drink ,and that she is 17, and that they wont be leaving the houise (driving etc). Should I give her a bottle?

I'm looking at a low alcohol white. Something that looks right but only has 7-8% alcohol , compared to 11%plus. Naturally I wouldn't draw attention to this.
If I say no , or no buy your own ,she will and end up with 14% , the alcohol content in wine has gone up dramatically in the last few years.

If I say your not going, thats not realtic given her age.

It isnt illegal for her to drink alcohol at house party. She cant legally buy her own wine though.

Buy her a bottle of chardonnay and a bottle of lemonade so she can make spritzers.

It depends if your DD is a 'young' 17 or not.

When I left school at 16, my parents would let me drink Alcopops, beer e.t.c, though they never bought me spirits or strong wine e.t.c. The way they looked at, I was left school, working full time, paying my own way in life.

Also one of my friends got married at 17, and was running her own home with her husband! So 17 is not really a child.

give her a bottle of wine, she is 17 so i am surprised she asked for a bottle of wine really. she will be 18 soon and can do what she likes then so showing her this trust may stand her in good stead. i personally cant see the harm but am sure there will be people that disagree.

morally, you are right, but... it is illegal to buy alcohol for a minor, you can disguise that in your weekly shopping, though,... would she be in trouble if stopped in the way to the house? could you drop her perhaps?

education is best for her to drink responsibly when she doesn't need your permission, aka really soon...

Thanks for all your input.
Like you say 17 is not a child , but i dont want to be equating drinking with adulthood (although everyone does as a teen)either. She stays over with a big group of school friends, and although shes fairly responsible ,she is still an awkward teen if you know what i mean.

If you dont buy it for her then she will get it else where. Just trust her and lay some ground rules. if she breaks them then take the house parties away from her.

We drink about three bottles of wine a week ,so I can easily get lower alcohol wine rather than usual stuff ,would do us some good anyway . Good point about buying for a minor, but if shes carrying it ,not behaving badly and not trying to buy it then legally I think she'll be fine.
Iv'e always been pretty straight about drink, so she understands consequences. I guess im being protective (not over)mum.

Lambrini - not sure i can go that far Shock

I usually get mine a couple of large bottles of pear cider or jacques type stuff if she is going to a house party. Last time I went out she shared a bottle of wine with her friend, they then text an older boy to get them another one! They had a great time, the two of them. Wine might be the new in drink for teens. I would get something low in alcohol.

I like Jacques and prefer to drink that to lager or wine.

I bought my son drugs, I bought him weed. Don't get me wrong because I would never buy him herion or any of that stuff - it was his birthday party and I wanted to buy weed because a few weeks before I heard that at a house party there was esctasy! I was horrified! Was it right for me to do that? I wanted to limit the damage that would be inflicted!

No, it wasn't a wind up, it's my eldest, he's at university! I bought from a fellow on campus. Look I know it sounds bad, but really I just don't want my son doing the dirty drugs like herion, cocaine etc!

Lambrini is about 7.5% plus not sure how vomit causing it is.Confused

It is something innocuous and cheap thats required (and low%).

sarah , yes i know what you are saying, but can you remember the early experiences you had , all we can do is prepare them and watch from the sidelines at this age.

Sarah, I admire you. After the day you have had, you are still able to come onto other threads on MN and post advice and experiences to others.

You brave, brave woman, you.

By the way, smoking weed won't preclude him from also taking e, or doing 'herion'.

Clipped your hooves yet?

Lambrini is vomit inducing because it's like drinking syrup!

There's a 'Cape something or other' low alcohol wine in Sainsbury's that's currently on offer... it tastes like proper wine too. I sobbed when I realised it was only 5%, it looks like the real deal.
