AIBU?

To think I should be able to open Bank Account's for the DC when I want

Especially when I've phoned beforehand to ask what was required and they said "Just pop in to your local branch"

So, I did, with the required ID, to be told that there was no-one there who could do it and I'd have to make an appointment and come back another day.

I just want a local account for them to pay in any birthday money. We're a small town, close to a larger one and not an affluent area, so there is only one bank left here. They have savings accounts elsewhere, but I just wanted them to have a bank account they can cycle to, for their spending money. Therefore, I don't have the choice to go elsewhere.

Anyway, after my phone call, we all walked the 30 mins to the bank to be told they couldn't do it, can't help sickness (one person off) and I'd have to come back. AIBU to think that they shouldn't make staffing levels so tight that one person sick means they're unable to offer basic services?

YABU, staff don't just hang around all day waiting for people to come in and open accounts...that's why appointments are necessary.

Why didn't you ask to make an appoinment before you set off, bearing in mind that it is a branch far from elsewhere stands to reason that someone could be off sick at any one time.

Make an appointment and go then, at least you got some exercise.

OK Worral, but when I specifically phoned beforehand to ask what I needed to do to open these accounts, they said "just pop in"

But the OP had been told "just pop in" rather than "please make an appointment".

YANBU, they're shit and should have made it clear you needed an appointment when you called.

Barclays did the exact same thing to me a couple of weeks ago. Bastards! Grin

you used to be able to just go in and open accounts, now you have to make appointments. it feels like the banks are putting up a wall between them and the customer, they can make the simplest of things so difficult when they needent be.

and actually yes they should have members of staff jst waiting around in case someone wants to come and open an account. there are few other positions in the work place where they keep everyone at home until somehting happens at work when they are needed.

You'd think they didn't want our bloody money and they're doing us a big favour taking it off our hands.

You want your kids to cycle to the bank to withdraw their spending money?

How old are the kids?
How much are they going to withdraw each time? 50p for the chewing gum vending machine?

why does it matter how much they will be withdrawing? isnt about teaching them about banks and saving and having access to a bank and how to use it? these are important things

LOL Quint, No, I'm thinking the cheques GPs send for birthday - have to be banked and then withdrawn IYSWIM. And, as Knitted says, it's about them starting to understand the system a bit.

What about a post office account?

Not sure about a posy office account (willhave to investigate). What I really wanted was for the DC to get used to operating their own bank account and I'm not sure it would bew the same at the Post Office

Exactly the same at a post office.......................you put money in ....you take money out.

apparently with post office account, you have to apply to get your money out and it takes a week! that's what MIL tells me anyway, as I've suggested opening a proper bank acct for DHs DD for her pocket money.

Actually, if it's so easy (and generally accepted) to smuggle in lids separately to the bottles then surely the whole rule is pointless?

I accept the damage that can be caused (didn't know that was the reason, I was told it was to do with bodily fluids and sealed bottles being used as missiles), but small change isn't banned and neither are whacking great flag poles, drum sticks or umbrellas.

Some drivers cause terrible harm on the roads, but no-one suggests everyone should be banned from driving, just that the irresponsibledrivers need to be properly dealt with. Why do law abiding football fans have to be trasted the same as the thugs?

create.that did make me laugh.

No you have not got to give a weeks notice on an ordinary account.

Some you have but then some bank accounts you have as well.

YANBU.

If you had wanted to open a business account or a savings account for your recent large lottery win instead of a child's bithday money account, there is no way they would have turned you away. Fact.
