AIBU?

More would it be unethical - Cake decorating for school

I have to make cakes for a school party.

I make great fairy cakes

I cannot decorate fairy cakes for toffee

Would I be unreasonable to decorate them and pretend littlemad had done it?

It would be the only way I could possibly avoid the derision of the uber-mummies at school....

Do you really care SO much what other mummies think of your cake making / decorating ability?

Even I can put a dob of icing and a skittle on top. Grin Stop fretting - if people care that much they seriously need a hobby.

Them, that is, not you...

Get them from Waitrose or somewhere if it bothers you that much. I did actually hear a woman say at the cake counter the other day "I want one that looks as if I made it myself". The lad sold her a Victoria sponge.

It's quite acceptable to either a) put some basic white icing or sprinkles on, b) do fancy piped buttercream icing or c) buy them from a shop, at DD1's school.

Anyway, though I like doing the piped icing and mad decorations I prefer eating the simply iced fairy cake ones as I find all that buttercream a bit too much.

Make a batch of butter cream or icing sugar and cream, transform the fairy cakes into cup cakes, put sprinkles on and voila!!!!! they look like you are a master baker

Grin I've just made some fairy cakes for a pre-school thing but haven't decorated them yet - I will also be doing a pretty poor job! Don't think I'll be telling anyone that DS1 decorated them though as he's been digging in the mud all day and it will take several baths to get the mud out from underneath his finger nails...

How likely is it that littlemad will rat you out to the uber-mummies? Maybe you should actually get littlemad to decorate them... Wink

A skittle hocuspontas??? Who puts SKITTLES on fairy cakes?

OP...just buy a cheapo icing bag and a pot of ready made American style frosting from Morrisons...squirt a little blob onto each cake and shove half a strawberry in.

Well sometimes I put TWO on if I have to cover up an odd lumpy bit...

(Cooking's not my strong point)

Whizz up buttercream and make butterfly buns, they never look rubbish

littlemad would not rat me out. I'd be more likely to drop myself in it, my lack of cake decorating skills are pretty legendary.

I'm thinking of three lots of icing, red, white and blue and red white and blue sprinkles on them.

They do taste bloody lovely though! I got a repeat order of the cake I took for DP to sell on red nose day.

Diabolo - yes, I am rather shallow and our uber mummies are extremely uber

Red icing is really hard to do, just to warn you :-)

Report
gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 18:40

it's not!

anyway cheat - buy Betty Crocker ready made 'butter cream' icing and use food colouring - buy disposable piping bags - it's a piece of pee really

I make my own butter icing but it's really easy to do and it looks posh Grin

gapbear · 11/04/2011 18:42

Really? How do you make it red, rather than pink? Butter icing, that is, water icing's not so bad.

Report
gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 18:43

well deep deep pink ! no one will know! i just use loads of colouring

I love the idea of skittles btw. The more improbable the sweet the better.

How about butterfly cakes? Make some buttercream icing, slice the tops of cut them in half, blob some buttercream on and then stick the sliced halves on top at an angle like butterfly wings?

Report
Lookandlearn · 11/04/2011 19:30

Glacé icing usually is foolproof ish. The recipe from the side if the packet make sure you put enough on to cover the cake and a knife dipped in a mug of just boiled water from the kettle to smooth it over. Then a sweet or sprinkles onto the icing before it starts to set.
